Title: STAFF PERCEPTIONS OF C

1
STAFF PERCEPTIONS OF CIT STAFF DEVELOPMENT
  • Annie Grove-White
  • Daljeet Johal

2
  • When and why do staff take up staff development
    in CIT
  • How useful do staff find these opportunities?
  • Some considerations
  • Discussion

3
Types of CIT
  • Generic e-mail, internet, Word, Powerpoint etc.
  • Virtual Learning Environment
  • Discipline specific SPSS, Dreamweaver, CAD,
    Quark etc.

4
What hampers staff taking up staff development in
CIT
5
Net Culture 2001
  • Lack of time, financial and people resources
  • Lack of strategic development
  • Lack of recognition of the importance of staff
    development
  • Lack of information
  • Lack of opportunity to exchange ideas and
    disseminate good practice

6
  • Generically, I suppose I update my skills by
using stuff like web, e-mail, getting my head
around, nobody taught me how to use Word or
Excel, but I can use it because I taught it
    myself.
  • ...most are communicating with students by
e-mail. But I do understand that theres an issue
about making block e-mails. Many people dont
know how to do a block e-mail to a student
cohort. I discovered this because Ive been
appointed e-learning co-ordinator for Arts and
    Humanities....

7
Why do staff take up CIT staff development?
8
  • A classic example is someone who wouldnt go
anywhere near it until he was given a role where
he had to contact 2-300 people and very quickly
realised that e-mail was the best - so then he
decided he was going to learn it and take it on
    board...

9
  • Those two typographic modules are being
subsumed into one module... it seemed one area
that I could substitute resources for face to
face delivery would be typographic design. Not
that theyre not going to be taught it, but they
can get a basic understanding and then I can
    take them further on...

10
  • At the moment, every Monday night I attend a
course and I need to increase my skills level in
a programme because my students need me to do
    that
  • But it is essential I cant not know about the
latest version of Quark, or the latest version of
Acrobat Its as much about the uses that the
publishing industry are making about technology

11
Methods used to develop skills other than
internal training
12
  • Im driven a lot by my practical research because
what I found is that all sorts of exciting things
can happen and that is passed into my teaching...
  • The one thing Im working on at the moment is
more research Culture and the Literary Prize
Conference and I want to put the proceedings
online I went on a Dreamweaver course and I am
being very well supported by tour School
webmaster and I was given time to develop that as
well We are trying to incorporate it into my
    teaching as well...

13
How useful is staff development in CIT?
  • Excellent examples of good practice in learning
    and teaching using CIT
  • Not all staff are as confident
  • Increase in workload through technology
  • Effectiveness of training structure

    personalising
  • How staff identify their needs

14
How are CIT development needs established?
15
  • We are very flexible I mean Thursday
afternoons are open access for training. People
sign up and come along or trainers will come out
and work with small groups or even one to
    one...

16
Cowan (1999)
  • Reflection-in-action colleagues, just-in-time
    support, on-line tutorials
  • Reflection-on-action regular Technology
    Day/Afternoon, group and one-to-one support
  • Reflection-for-action staff appraisal, Annual
    Programme Reports, innovation grants, pilot
projects etc. Linked centrally to other
    strategies

17
Continuous Professional Development
  • ECDL, Teaching Certificate etc.
  • CPD minimise the burden on individuals and
    institutions (Framework Document)
  • Extrinsic demands - versus- intrinsic motivation
