What is the "Lime Kiln" ?
The four à chaux  lime kiln  is a fortress from
the french Maginot Line built before World War II.
The men lived in this work in case of war about
25 meters deep under earth.
We encourage you to visit this fortress to see
what life was like in the 4.5 Km long underground
during a exciting trip within the work. This is

The Lime Kiln's distinctive feature The Incline
The Lime kiln is a work built on two levels.
These two levels are linked up by a very
particular Incline. From one level to the other
120 m long, 24 m high and 215 steps

• The fortress is open all over the year and at all
  times for booked groups.
• Between beginning November and end March, the
  fortress is open all saturdays and sundays at
  230 pm and between December 27th and 30th daily
  at 230 pm.
• The fortress is open daily between end March and
  beginning November.
• From end March to April 30th and from October 1st
  to beginning november Guided tours at 200 pm
  and 300 pm.
• From May 1st to September 30th guided tours at
  1030 am 200 pm 300 pm 400 pm.
• Guided tours in French or German. English with
  booking. Its possible to link you to an Italian
  interpreter.

Where is the fortress ?
The fortress Four à Chaux (Lime Kiln) is in
Lembach, in the North of Alsace about 60km from
Strasbourg.
