  • Estimation of tendency of fluctuations of
    radionuclides activities in the environment

4
Cooperation with other institutions

    quarter)
  • 13 samples of river sediments from 12 rivers
    (once/year)
  • 24 samples of water from the Baltic Sea and
    Curonian Lagoon (once/year)
  • 18 samples of sediments from the Baltic Sea and
    Curonian Lagoon (once/year)
  • 18 samples from INPP region (twice per year
water, sediments, ground, grass, leaves and
    other)
  • Intercomparisons with laboratories from other
    countries
  • Baltic Intercomparison 2003
  • EC intercomparison programme on airborne
    particulate

6
Activity in 2003 (continued)

    the end of September)
  • PhD students conference in Institute of
    Physics, Vilnius, Lithuania (in October)

7
Activity in 2003 (continued)
  • Preparing of reports
  • Report on Radiology monitoring in Lithuania
    2002
  • Half year report on radioactivity in aerosols
    (twice/year)
  • Reports on radioactivity levels in the Baltic
Sea and Curonian Lagoon for HELCOM
  • Participating in preparing of legal basis
  • Preparing of corrections for new normative
    documents
  • Preparing of normative document Determination
of Sr-90 in environment objects (till the end of
    year)
  • Control of activity in INPP
  • Checking of radiological situation in the zone
of INPP according Annual report of INPP
  • Additional monitoring of INPP region
  • Checking and correcting of new monitoring
    programme of INPP

8
Automatic gamma monitoring network
  • 20 gamma radiation monitoring stations
  • 9 PMS (NaI detector, GM detector, rain gauge, 3
    thermometers)
  • 2 ALNOR (GM detector)
  • 9 AGIR (NaI detector)

9
Automatic gamma monitoring network (continued)
10
Monitoring of precipitation
  • Total beta
  • Sr-90
  • Be-7
  • Cs-137

11
Aerosols
Aerosol sampling station is situated in eastern
part of Lithuania in Utena about 60 km from INPP.
Air sampler JL-900 Snow White is situated in 10
m height from ground level. Used filter material
- glass fibber filter (1?m). Fluctuation of
activity concentration of Be-7 and Cs-137 are
observed.
12
Monitoring of lakes and rivers
  • Cs-137 in water and sediments
  • Sr-90 in water and sediments
  • Pu-238, Pu-239,240 in sediments from lakes

13
Monitoring of the Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon
  • Measured parameters for water
  • Salinity
  • Temperature
  • pH
  • Measured radionuclides in water and sediments
  • Cs-134
  • Cs-137
  • K-40
  • Sr-90

14
Used procedures and equipment
  • Measured radionuclides
  • Gamma emitters (by using high-purity Ge detectors
and spectrometry system, OXFORD and INSPECTOR)
  • Sr-90 (by using automatic alpha-beta system
    Tesla)
  • Total beta (by using beta-radiometer RUB-01P)
  • Pu-238, Pu-239,240 (by using alpha detectors,
    Tennelec TC 256)
  • Procedures for samples preparing
  • Double sorbent cartridge method for Cs
    pretreatment Cu2Fe(CN)6
  • Extraction of Y-90 (with 10 HDEHP solution) in
n-heptane toluene from dissolved ashed sample for
    determination of Sr-90 in sediments
  • Concentrating of Sr-90 (together with Cs-137)
from 20 L of water with HCl, SrCl2, CsCl, FeCl3,
CaCl2, K4Fe(CN)6, Na2CO3, adding of stable Sr as
    carrier.
  • Separating of Pu by using of anion exchange resin

15
Plans for future
  • Renovation in laboratory new separate room for
    spectrometry
  • Starting of preparing of reports for EC
