EEE Project
As reported in the previous meeting we received 3
MRPC on December 2005, serial number 11, 17, 18.
We tested them extensively and found them very
noisy. Another set of MRPCs arrived in October
2006, serial number 50, 51, 52. They were built
at CERN by Bologna Liceo Fermi students. Very
good results on efficiency and rates were
obtained with the second telescope (presented in
the previous EEE Project EC meeting) In December
2006 all the MRPCs for the Bologna area
telescopes arrived. We tested (gas tightness,
efficiency and rates) all the chambers obtaining
almost the same results.

Spatial resolution (1)
We used the position (strip/time difference) on
upper and lower chambers to calculate the
expected position on the middle chamber both for
x and y coordinate
Our coordinate system The x coordinate is
orthogonal to the strips The y coordinate is

Other measurements
We measured the muon rate as a function of the
distance between the MRPCs.
We also measured the muon reconstructed zenith
angle and compared it with simulation

Trigger rate measurement
Using trigger card as a scaler The LTM card
has the capability to measure single, double and
triple coincidence rate.
Using GPS time To obtain this distribution we
defined the start of run time as the time of the
first trigger (both GPS or TDC) and then
calculated the time distance between each event
and the start.

Further Tests
In order to have a complete VME data acquisition
system we tested the Trigger card (LTM) designed
by E. Scapparone and the GPS interface.

Status of Reggio Emilia telescope
After inauguration of the telescope in May we are
working with students and teachers to set the
detector to work. Soon we will have the detector
in full data acquisition. We were waiting for GPS
interface and now they are ready! See Eugenio
Scapparone
Next telescope inauguration
Installation of telescope in the Liceo Fermi in
Bologna is almost completed and we will be ready
to inaugurate soon
Next telescope installation
We are planning installation inside Liceo Galvani
in Bologna. We are waiting for DC/DC converters
and FEAs (few weeks)

After installation inside Liceo Galvani we will
have 3 telescopes in the Bologna area

Conclusions
  • All the MRPCs delivered in Bologna have been
    tested
  • Except the first set all the MRPCs show good
    performances
  • The spatial resolution has been measured in the
    Bologna INFN lab. to be 1.96 x 0.96 cm2
  • After tests on Trigger card and GPS Interface the
    DAQ system is fully VME based
  • Analysis codes have been optimized to monitor the
    detector and user friendly interface has been
    prepared
  • Installation and work inside and with schools
    started and by the end of this year we may have 3
    working telescopes in Bologna the Reggio Emilia
    one
