Title: Rocks
1Rocks
2Types of Rocks
3Igneous RocksWhat are They?
- Fire Rocks
- Formed underground by trapped, cooled magma
- Formed above ground when volcanoes erupt and
magma cools
4Types of Igneous Rocks
5Sedimentary RocksHow They are Made
- Wind and water break down the earth
- Bits of earth settle in lakes and rivers
- Layers are formed and build up
- Pressure and time turn the layers to rock
6Types of Sedimentary Rocks
7Metamorphic RocksWhat are They?
- Rocks that have changed
- They were once igneous or sedimentary
- Pressure and heat changed the rocks
8Types of Metamorphic Rocks
9The Life of a Rock
Layers of sediment join together.
Changes are made from pressure and heat.
Melted rock cools and hardens
10Rocks Have Been Used For Many Years and For
Many Things

27The Rock Cycle Song (Sing to the tune of Row,
Row, Row Your Boat SEDIMENTARY rock Has been
formed in layers Often found near water
sources With fossils from decayers Then theres
IGNEOUS rocks Here since Earth was born Molten
lava, cooled and hardened Thats how it is
formed These two types of rocks Can also be
transformed With pressure, heat, and
chemicals METAMORPHIC theyll become. (Dont
forget to try singing in rounds!)

29Examples of Metamorphic Rocks
- Granite to gneiss
- Similar colors in minerals
- Spots look changed somehow
- Sandstone to quartzite
- Sandstone looks like it has tiny crystals
- or pieces of sand cemented together
- Quartzite has tiny crystals
- Limestone to marble
- Limestone appears to be creamy white or pale
gray - and appear layered and flat
- Marble can be similar in color
- Shale to slate
- Metamorphic rocks undergo intense heat and
pressure to change the original rock into a new
rock, but the new rock is still comprised of the
same minerals as the original rock.
