3LATINO NIGHT AT LOS ARQUEROS
A warm, colourful and joyful atmosphere was the
perfect setting created this summer by the Social
Committee of Los Arqueros. Many of the members
did not want to miss this occasion to meet and
enjoy the summer evening with mojitos and Latin
music which proved the attendees to be great
dancers and party goers. Sponsors like Wines
For You, Tehuelche Restaurant, Selenza, AR
Klinoel and others also contributed to make the
evening more attractive. Thematic parties are
regularly organized at the club and after the
success of this one more will follow.
4TAYLOR WOODROW, GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY IN SPAIN
- This summer, Taylor Woodrow, the biggest English
building company in Spain celebrated its golden
anniversary. Taylor Woodrow de España is the
Spanish subsidiary of the leader developer Taylor
Wimpey plc, a dedicated homebuilding company
established in 1921 and with operations in the
UK, North America, Spain and Gibraltar. - Taylor Woodrow de España has a great variety of
apartments in the most attractive areas of Spain,
(Baleares Isles, Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol)
and in order to commemorate such event, 50 units
launched the market with a 25 discount, well
received by the clients. - The location chosen to celebrate the 50th
anniversary was Los Arqueros, the most
representative project in Spain. Suppliers and
employees did not want to miss this event. Among
the guests, a very special one, Javier Ballester,
the General Director of Taylor Woodrow de España
who has been working for the company for the last
30 years. Ballester pointed out the companys
outstanding performance over the years even at
tough times. - The white party had a DJ, a capoeira exhibition
and a great buffet served by Los Arqueros
Restaurant. An unforgettable evening that lasted
all night long -
5CHARITY GARDEN FETE AT LOS ARQUEROS
- Recently, a charity event in aid of FUNDASPANDEM
and TRIPLE A gathered around 200 hundred people
at Los Arqueros. - Promoted by the Social Committee and with the
help and collaboration of members of the club and
other people along the coast, the garden fEte had
lots of activities going on to keep the customers
entertained, including tombolas, wheel of fortune
an numerous stalls raising funds for the day. - Prizes were guaranteed and in total, 3.130 was
raised. - Our thanks go to all who participated and to the
companies who contributed to such a worth cause.
Hope to see you next year. - TRIPLE A info_at_aaahelps.com

6THE WISEST AT LOS ARQUEROS
-
- School days are back and A students can prove
how good they are at geography, history, sports
and other themes. It is the case of Barry Gill,
Mark and Donna Draper, Fran Whelan, Alan
Vowls and Cathy Hine, a team known as the BBBs,
which stands for Barry's Brain Boxes, winning for
the second time in a row. - Last November almost 70 people attended, a fish
and chips night where the BBBs proved to be the
wisest at Los Arqueros, winning for the second
time in a row. There was a tie in second position
between The Boiled Egg Heads and The Sloths
which was won by The Sloths on the tie-break
question. - No cheating involved only fishand it is a truth
universally acknowledged that fish is good for
your brain.
7RECOGNITION TO LOS ARQUEROS
- JUNTA DE ANDALUCÍA S AWARD
- The tourism industry is a basic pillar of the
Andalusia's economy, playing such a role in the
socio professional and cultural reality of many
of its towns and municipalities. For that reason,
the Regional Government of Andalusia has
considered the quality designation fundamental,
as a guarantee of a satisfactory experience for
travellers and, therefore, as an additional
incentive to come and discover the Region and as
a way of ensuring that visits are subsequently
repeated. - To this end, the Minister for Tourism, Trade
and Sport from the Regional Government of
Andalusia, Luciano Alonso Alonso, has shown the
support and recognition to Los Arqueros Golf
Country Club for the Environmental Certificate
(ISO 14.0001) with an Icon that was handed over
last November in the Exhibition Centre in Malaga. -
- The meeting last November was to thank for all
the certificates and distinctions that companies
like Los Arqueros, have been awarded to ensure
Andalusia is synonym of quality for everyone who
comes to visit. Thus, consolidating the Region at
the forefront of international tourism. - Junta de Andalusia's target for next year is to
achieve 1.500 companies with the Quality
Certificate or with the Environmental one. In
Andalusia, only 5 golf courses have the Quality
certificate and only 3 have the Environmental
certificate. Los Arqueros is ahead its
contemporaries.
8TOURNAMENTS OF FUTURE GREENKEEPERS AT LOS ARQUEROS
- As farewell to their two years of Advanced
Greenkeeping Course at Málaga University, the
students and their teachers decided to play a
tournament at Los Arqueros. A really unusual
event to see - Along two intensive years, these students do
1.800 hours of trainings at golf courses along
the coast, and Los Arqueros has been chosen not
only as a reference golf course where students
want to come to learn from our system, but also
play and enjoy the good conditions of the course,
according the specialists. - While playing, teachers did not miss the chance
to have practical lessons and Los Arqueros served
as model for the Environmental (ISO 14.001),
Health and Safety (OHSAS 18.001) and soon the
Quality certificate. - Nevertheless, there was also time for
competitiveness and rivalry among the players,
winning the greenkeeper of Los Arqueros, Jose
Antonio García Doña. - EADE (the Regional School of Business
Administration together with the University of
Málaga offer the Masters in Golf Maintenance)
9- CLUBS FOR BALLS
- The football team, S.V. Geel-Wit, from Haarlem,
Holland has come for the third year in a row to
play golf at Los Arqueros. - Friends, good weather, tourist friendly people
and the challenge of playing at Los Arqueros are
their life motives to come to Spain. Comments
were made on the improvement of tees, greens and
the fairways which have taken place over the last
years. -
- These amateur football players continue meeting
and recalling memorable football evenings. A
trace of those days are the polo shirts with
their nick names printed on the back. The numbers
are now reserved for the clubs. - We hope to see them next year
10- AESGOLF COMPETITION at LOS ARQUEROS

12MARSHALS COMPETITION
-
-
- An important part in a golf course are the
marshals. -
- All fourteen marshals are golf players and
members of the club who know well the rules of
golf. Among them there are four different
nationalities which makes easier the interaction
with players and as the chief marshal Dirk Den
Broeder . - It is worth highlighting Filiberto Puente,
handicap 8.1 with more than 30 years of
experience in golf and winner for the second year
in a row of the Los Arqueros Marshals
competition. - Filiberto has played in almost all courses in
the province, has worked at Las Brisas Golf, La
Quinta and voluntarily at Valderrama, Aloha, San
Roque, La Cala, Aloha, and then, he finally
joined Los Arqueros in 2006 because as he points
out, he likes the challenge of playing in it, its
beauty, location and people. Filibertos personal
challengeto be a golf referee.

17SPOT LIGHT COMMENTS FROM THE DIRECTOR.
Ulf Svendsen
Introduction We know the importance of
information in a Golf Club, and we are aware that
we can improve in this subject. One of its
reasons has been the publishing costs of the two
first News Letters. The first one was sponsored
by Taylor Woodrow. The second, was financed by
the Club with publicity support. For the coming
editions we target to finance 100 through
publicity support. But the current market
situation is making it difficult. Even so, we
want to continue publishing news to the interest
of all Members. Therefore we have decided to
create our own web interactive news letter on a
quarterly basis. We are a young Club, only two
years old. Slow or fast, we are going in the
right direction.
18Comunication.. Last 29th of September it was
celebrated the first Information Committee
meeting, composed by one member of the Board of
Directors, three Committee members (Agustín, Dick
and Karl) and me. An interesting meeting, which
permitted the exchange of questions and answers
between Members and Board of Directors. Regarding
this meeting, for different reasons, its first
minutes was not published in the web nor boards,
but was handed out locally to members whom
requested it. For the knowledge to all Members, I
expose it content herewith
MINUTES OF THE COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE LOS
ARQUEROS GOLF 23-09-2008 Attendants Mr Dick
(president of the Disciplinary Committee) Mr Karl
(vocal of the Social Committee) Mr Gª Agüera
(president of the Competition Committee) Mr
Svendsen (manager of Los Arqueros Golf) Mr
Menéndez (advisor of Los Arqueros Golf) At the
beginning the agenda consists of 6 points, at the
request of the committee, another one is added.
The debate begins
19 1. Accounts Closing August-08 The accumulated
closing to August 2008 is reviewed. In terms of
the income, we are above the budget. In terms of
the buggies we are bellow the target due to the
special offer of two green fees buggy. This
deflection is more than compensated with the sale
of direct green fees and tour operator green
fees. With regards to membership, we are below
the objective for not selling more shares and
therefore not having increased the number of
members. The Editda to August 31 is of approx.
60.000 The strong impact that the amortization
has in the PBT is commented and this is due to
the adopted amortization plan which is more
aggressive. The club is in contact with auditors
with the purpose of reviewing the criterion to
adapt to a more appropriate plan due to the new
situation of golf.
202. - Forecast close 2008 A forecast of closing
2008 in agreement with the objective is presented
and supposes to reach a EBITDA of 60.000. It is
proved that during the last 4 months of the year
the result will be 0, due to a conservative
point of view, since September is not fulfilling
the expectations and although a good high season
is anticipated, a conservative criterion is
adopted as a result of the present international
situation. Also the tendency of the pound, which
continues around 20 lower than same time last
year. 3. - Sale of shares In deed, the sale of
shares has stopped due to the lack of demand.
Nevertheless, TW has shares available for those
who would be interested. TWs decision not to
sell shares off cheaply is reinforced and on the
contrary, would rather wait to protect its value.
The committee appreciates this position and
agrees. The Communication Committee proposes to
TW to state that there are shares available.
There are people that do not know this fact and
there might be some interested. They also propose
to make small packages, but the price should
never be bellow 18.000. They estimate that the
financing will be a key element. TW is committed
to analyse this point.
214. Los Aguilares Golf According to the latest
news, in approximately a month, the town hall of
Benahavís will initially approve its new General
Plan. In this plan Los Aguilares is included and
considered as Sport-Golf. After this approval,
the Junta de Andalucía will determine the final
approval or denial of such plan. It is estimated
another 6 months. As stated in the last AGM, once
we have the plan approved, all possible
alternatives for that area will be analysed,
safeguarding the acquired commitments in terms of
Cost-Benefit-Approach, so that a decision on the
basis of the most profitable project for Los
Arqueros can be taken. It is asked if TW is going
to contribute to the construction of the nine
holes with the pending funds. It is confirmed
that in the construction of Los Arqueros, the
construction of Los Aguilares was valued and
stocked, a small portion was spent in 2007 for
the pumping station and the sewage treatment
plant and still there is approx. 1 million Euros
stocked.
225. - AGM 2008 minutes The minutes of the last AGM
(June 26th 2008) are very concise and they should
include all the aspects commented and dealt
during the meeting, including even any other
business. This appreciation is shared also with
the golf manager. Therefore, the minutes will be
remade and sent. 6. - Newsletter The committee
declares to be very satisfied with the Newsletter
and asks to increase its regularity to at least
quarterly. Additionally, members demand
communication with greater regularity (monthly),
where a small Management Report should be
included. In terms of the Newsletter, its
regularity is matter of costs although it will be
analyzed with the attempt to obtain advertising
financing. On the other hand we are analyzing the
viability of a private Web for members where to
have a more fluent communication and access to a
private blog where members can communicate
between themselves and with the Golf
Management. At the moment we are exploring a
possibility of sending SMS through Golfspain as a
reminder of competitions, etc.
237. - Renovation of the contract of the restaurant
The management has analysed with a consulting
company how much the rent of a similar restaurant
would be. The result shows that it would be
necessary to slightly increase the rent (10-15)
monthly. The costs of maintenance of the
furniture are on behalf of the tenant. A meeting
with the present tenant has taken place and they
show interest in the renovation of the contract
and an improvement of conditions for golf. The
committee emphasizes the enormous risk of
changing the tenant. Members are pleased with the
actual tenant in all senses. It is requested to
the Management not to take unnecessary risks
because the profitability of the restaurant is
not essential for the golf but a change can be
disastrous, that is why the committee asks to
consider experience and solvency. Finally a new
meeting with the committee is set for the end of
November or beginning of December (availability
pending).
24Numbers.. Good news, but we are careful with
this announcement. With the October year to date,
we are going well. Our EBITDA is above budget,
although November and December, are complicated
months and little foreseeable. Regarding rates,
there has been lately Members questioning our
price policy. One should know that the price
policy is a critical aspect of the management to
be solved through analysing the market, and to
bet consistently on the correct price according
to the market situation. In this sense, it must
be emphasized that our income year to date
January October 2008 is above year 2007 and
2006 its results endorse the adopted price
policy. More over, we need profits for our course
improvements..

26Golf Plan 2009. We are finishing the last
details with our Golf Plan 2009. Regarding 2008,
it is worth mentioning that we expect to achieve
more course improvement (see investment
planning). Its economic target is set to an
EBITDA of 70.000. See the following graphics

35Driving Range. Before year 2001, the Driving
Range permitted only the use of irons due to that
its height at that time was only one third of the
actual. Even then, it used to fall down when
strong winds came in. In the winter of 2001 we
decided to improve the actual structure and
increase its height in order to permit
woods. Since there did not exist any company
specialised in installing 12 meters high
protecting nets, we contracted an electricity
line constructing company. The towers installed
at that time had an upper point pull resistance
of 350 and 500 kilos. With the time, their
calculations made to resist those strong winds
that sweeps over this area every two or three
year with a strength far beyond the 100 km/hour,
was obviously mistaken. (This meteorological
incidence is of such calibre that even the
Spanish Electricity Company, Endesa, with
engineers and many year experience with towers,
see how every year the wind tips over their
towers of 8.000 or 15.000 kg pull
resistance) With the years we have improved its
wind resistance, by creating a flap system in the
netting, and increasing the resistance of the
towers from 500 to 800 kg, and now to 1.200 kg
pull resistance. Up till now, all these
reparation works have been covered by the
insurance companies.

37Restaurant Due to the current difficult
economical market situation of the companies, we
have considered not to run extra risks. For this
reason, due to the experience and solidity of the
current managing company of the Restaurant, we
have decided to sign with them a new contract. It
is worth to emphasize that this new agreement
doubles the current Bar discount (20) in the
Members Lounge, and gives an additional 5 (15)
on lunches and dinners in this lounge. It also
grants a rental increase of 15 with 2008, and
that investments due to maintenance and renewal
are covered by them.
38Smoke.. I receive with a certain frequency
complains about the smoke from smokers in the
Members Bar. Due to its special health factor, it
should be fair to organize an e-mail voting on
this subject. For this reason, during the whole
December month we will be open to receive letters
in favour or against smoking in this Bar. Its
results will be published during the first week
in January 2009.
39Bunkers. During this year there has been
several discussion and comments about the state
of our Bunkers, which we are aware need
improvements. Regarding this matter, we follow
the guide lines of the USGA (United States
Greenkeeper Association), which I herewith expose
some of their contents and recommendations
40Bunker description A bunker is defined in the
Rules of Golf as a hazard consisting of a
prepared area of ground, often a hollow, from
which turf or soil has been removed and replaced
with sand or the like. The principal components
of a bunker are The base is the relatively flat
portion of a bunker that is composed of sand.
Under the base is a relatively hard, impermeable
subsoil termed the floor of the bunker. The face
is the sloped portion of the bunker nearest the
putting green and is composed of sand. This face
is backed by a relatively stable bunker wall, and
sometimes with a flat plateau on the lower
portion termed the shelf that allows sand to be
built up the face via vibratory tamping. The
turfed lip is the vertical edge of a turf that
forms over the sand of the bunker face. The two
basic types of bunkers are termed greenside and
fairway, which are self explanatory. Finally,
there is the turfed fore slope, which is turfed
face on the greenside of a bunker.
41Bunker design There are no prescribed limits for
the size and shape of bunkers. In fact, variation
adds interest. Specific dimensions are result of
the artistry and imagination of the golf course
architect combined with the desired functions of
the bunker. The primary function of a bunker is
to extract penalty for a miss-hit shot, which is
sometimes quantified as one-half a stroke.
Therefore, one guideline in design and
construction is that a bunker be of sufficient
depth or conformation to prevent golfers from
playing out of the bunker as easily as from a
fairway or greenside lie in grass. Bunkers range
in size from what are called pot bunkers to
relatively large areas.
42Bunker Face The bunker face refers to the sand
slope or incline of the bunker that normally is
visible to a golfer when playing the hole. By
definition the san face is part of the bunker and
thus is not to be turfed. The original function
of the face was to make the recovery shot out of
a bunker more difficult. However, the invention
of the sand wedge made such recovery shots
relatively easy, especially around the putting
green where distance is not a factor. With recent
emphasis on strategic design, a primary function
of a bunker face is to alert the golfer to the
hazard so the shot can be planned accordingly.
This is very important distinction between the
strategic approach of golf course design, where
hazards are clearly visible, and the older penal
style, where many bunkers were pits hidden from
the view of an unsuspecting golfer.
43Turfed Lip Golfers should not be able to putt
out of bunkers onto green. Thus, the bunker face
typically possesses a vertical barrier or lip.
The turfed lip is the vertical edge of a turf
that forms over the bunker sand. A turf lip
normally is 2 to 4 inches (50-100 mm) high that
is, the grassy lip and turf surrounding the
bunker should be this height above the level of
sand in the bunker. The turfed lip of a bunker
serves four purposes a) to prevent golfer
from putting out of greenside bunkers b) to
prevent balls that land in the bunker from
rolling out c) to clearly define the edge of
the hazard for proper rules interpretations d)
to stabilize the bunker edge
44Sand Depth A good rule of thumb is to install
sand to the minimal depth possible, in order to
reduce problems with fried-egg lies. The settled
sand depth in the base of greenside bunkers
should be al least 4 inches (100 mm), with a 4 to
6 inch (100 150 mm) depth preferred. A 2 to 4
inche (50 100 mm) depth is suggested on the
upper portion of the face, with 3 inches (75 mm)
preferred, if the bunker design calls for a high,
steep slope. The sand depth of fairway bunkers
typically is shallower than that of greenside
bunkers, usually being in the range of 4 to 6
inches (100 150 mm). If a firm sand is used,
this allows a greater depth with fewer
contamination problems and more effective use of
mechanized bunker rakes.
45Sand selection Criteria to be considered in
selection of a sand for bunkers include (a)
particle size distribution, (b) particle shape,
(c) colour, (d) composition, (e) purity and (f)
long-term availability. Note that golfers at
individual courses have personal preferences as
to bunkers sand characteristics that may vary
substantially.
46Sand particle size Selection of the correct
sand particle size distribution is an important
decision, since it affects playing quality from
bunkers as well as bunker maintenance. Thus, the
decision should be based in part on a physical
sand particle size analysis, conducted by a
reputable, accredited physical testing
laboratory. Sand of the preferred size
distribution provides a variety of ball lies,
depending on the angle of entry and force of the
ball at impact. The suggested particle size
distribution for bunker sands, is an
angular/sharp shape. Sand in the suggested range
for bunker should pass through a 16 mesh screeen
and be retained on a 150 mesh screen. A mayor
portion of the sand, 75, should be in the 0.25
to 1.0 mm range. Sand in the suggested range
provide the best all-around conditions in terms
of (a) ball lie, (b) firmness of footing, (c)
minimum surface, (d) internal water drainage, and
(e) ease of bunker maintenance. Ideally, a sand
provides the desired ball position in greenside
bunkers when the ball is slightly depressed in
its own impact mark. Sand that sets up too firmly
normally provides little o no penalty, while sand
that is too soft frequently results in an
embedded lie. Sand with a round shape or a very
narrow size range is undesirable because it
remains too loose. Thus, sands characterized by a
distinct particle size distribution within the
suggested range are preferred, since they are
firmer.
47Sand composition Sands vary in composition.
Hard, silicate-type sands are preferred to soft,
calcareous sands such as coral or limestone sand.
The more stable composition is a much better
choice. The softer sands break down under
constant weathering and thus tend to stick
together, which in turn necessitates deep daily
raking to minimize objectionable crusting. This
weathering also necessitates more frequent,
costly replacement than is the case for the more
stable silica sands.

Sand depth This is a issue let to resolve. Los
Arqueros has a lack of sand depth in a certain
number of bunkers. In addition to this problem,
there is the flourishing of drainage gravel to
the upper sand level.
50Sand consistency New sand directly arrived from
the quarry, is pure sand free from foreign
materials. Even sand coming from the same quarry,
can have different consistency, depending on the
quarry layer depth. Once the sand is in the
bunker, it gets progressively contaminated by its
surrounding nature (clay, silt and organic
materials contaminated through golf shoes, wind,
animals, recycled water..etc) that tend to
solidify the sand. Since this contamination is
not equal around the course, after some year the
sand consistency in the different bunkers can
never be the same. Even new sand (with exact
selection) must be tasted out, and with added
mixtures if needed, before use. Sand is a complex
matter, since it is a natural material dogged out
of the mountain, where its consistency has to be
tasted out on site. As an example, at the Aloha
Golf Course they changed for two years ago there
bunker sand (silicate) to marble sand. For their
members it was unsatisfactory, and now they are
going to change back to silicate sand. On the
other hand, La Brisas changed sand in their
bunkers last year (new silicate), but members did
not like its consistency. So this year they are
going to change to marble sand. The Greenkeeper
at La Quinta Golf, confirmed me that they use the
same sand as Los Arqueros. And that they had have
fried egg problems when they supply bunkers with
new sand the first months.
51We are currently carrying out a sampling of our
63 bunkers, to prepare improvements works on the
bunkers at the end of this year beginning of
2009.
