Title: A LAKE DISTRICT
1- A LAKE DISTRICT
- WORLD HERITAGE SITE
People living in Cumbria are passionate about
the places they live and are actively involved in
making them better for future generations.
Visitors come, not just to view one of the
worlds most precious landscapes, but to enjoy an
active experience, which is only enhanced by the
people and communities that they find throughout

10- Whatever the management plan says, I believe that
its important to involve community groups. I
also believe that the main thrust of this should
be about social development, environmental/ecologi
cal conservation and not for a private profit.
J. Bailey, Kendal
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
Support the idea if it will support local
farmers to maintain the traditional methods of
hill farming. However how will it effect the
building of affordable housing for local people.
Gill, Kendal
Heritage status aims to support the look and form
of the lakeland landscape. This comes from how
people live earn on that landscape. It
therefore needs community support and needs to
support the community. Factors that are
important are the retention of the village
school, shop, post office and church to keep
nucleal communities alive. More fully occupied
houses in villages by full time residents (active
residency). Less dependency on cars more
public transport. A living landscape retains
locally based talent and business. Stuart
Forbes, Ross-Shire, Highlands.
I am not in favour of World Heritage Status, as I
feel it will add to further bureaucracy and
restrictions for local people and businesses and
stifle employment and development opportunities
for young residents. - A.M Gorton, Windermere
11Royal Institute of British Architects Seminar -
April 24th 2008
- The general consensus was that WHS status would
have no additional planning control but may be a
tool and an opportunity to foster the development
of the area - RIBA Quarterly Journal July 08

08 It will be important to ensure that their
role (both historically and currently) as
economic drivers in Lake District landscape is
recognised in any future bid and that their
trajectory of continuing change and development
is recognised in future management proposals. It
could be argued that the long-term sustainable
conservation of the Lake District is reliant
on ensuring a strong economic base for its towns
as well as it tourism, farming, forestry and
other industries.
