What is a morpheme?
  • The smallest part of a word that has meaning.

Morphological Processes
  • Affixation An affix is attached to a root
  • The affix can be an prefix, suffix, infix or
    circumfix
  • Compounding Two morphemes connect to form one
    word
  • Reduplication All or part of the word is
    repeated, resulting in a change in meaning
  • Alternation A regular change within the
    morpheme
  • Suppletion The whole form changes to change
    meaning

Language Types
  • Isolating Each word is a morpheme.
  • Agglutinating Words can be made up of several
    morphemes which are usually easy to identify.
  • Fusional Words can be made up of several
    morphemes, but morphemes may not be easy to see.
