Title: FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

1
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • Postgraduate Research Support Scheme (PRSS)
  • Awarded to Faculties within the University to
    support postgraduate research students (replaces
    allowance system)
  • Each School allocated funding according to their
student load (X per average FTE of previous 2
    semester enrolments)
  • In 2005, SPH received 23,000

2
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • PRSS
  • Must be
  • Currently enrolled (including international
    students)
  • PhD students may have three successful
applications over their candidature provided it
does not exceed eight full-time semesters (or
part-time equivalent) at the closing date for
    applications.
  • MPhil students may have one successful
application provided their candidature does not
exceed four full-time semesters (or part-time
equivalent) at the closing date for applications.

3
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • PRSS
  • Funding for
  • Presenting a paper or poster in connection with
    the students research.
  • Expenses in connection with the use of specialist
services, or a visit to use specialist facilities
or to learn specialist technique/s directly
related to the students research, but were
beyond those normally provided by the School or
    Department.
  • Field expenses provided the PRSS funds are not
used to defray the infrastructure costs normally
provided by the School or Department.
  • Purchase of specialist books, periodicals,
software that are essential to the students
research, but are not normally available or
difficult to obtain in the University.
  • Purchase of computers or other equipment that are
essential to the students research and are above
and beyond the normal infrastructure provided by
    the School or Department.
  • Thesis production expenses to a maximum amount of
600 for a PhD thesis or 300 for a Masters
thesis. Only students who do not hold a
scholarship which provides such expenses and who
expect to submit their theses in the current
semester/year can apply under this category.
Often problems with the timing of these claims.

4
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • PRSS
  • Funding limits
  • Minimum of 200
  • 2,000 available for presenting a paper or poster
    at an international conference.
  • 1,200 the maximum for any other claim.

5
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • PRSS
  • Closing dates
  • Usually 2 rounds per year (if funds remaining)
  • Late April/early May
  • September

6
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • SRC schemes for students
  • Student travel scheme
  • Student small grants scheme
  • Collaborative research student scheme
  • Guest visitor scheme

7
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • Student travel scheme
  • Top-up scheme for those who have been awarded
PRSS funding to present at international
conferences, or conduct international field work
and whose expenses exceed the PRSS limit.
  • Only half of the additional expenses funded.
  • 10,000 allocated for 2006.

8
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • Student small grants scheme
  • Additional SRC funding to support PRSS-type
applications (as PRSS insufficient in previous
    years).
  • Conference travel has lower priority (as two
    other schemes cover these expenses).
  • Applicants must declare what other forms of
support they have access to (eg other grant
schemes, research grant funding or scholarships)
and applications will be ranked on a needs basis.
  • Applicants may make more than one application to
this scheme per year, but additional applications
    will receive a lower ranking.
  • 20,000 allocated for 2006.

9
FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • Collaborative research student scheme
  • To foster the work of collaborative research
student groups within the School. These groups
can apply for funds, on a competitive basis, to
support their operations. Funding may be
provided for items such as payment of honoraria
for guest speakers, domestic airfares, taxi fares
    etc
  • 2,000 allocated for 2006.
  • Similar assistance available from SUPRA, so need
    to apply to them first.
  • Unallocated funds reallocated to other SRC
    schemes.
