Why ?
  • Tower Hamlets is the fourth most deprived borough
    in the UK.
  • Poverty leads to poor diet which is manifested in
    high levels of food related illnesses -
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  •  
  • The Bangladeshi community have the highest levels
    of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in the UK.
  •  
  • Very high rates of coronary heart disease in
    Tower Hamlets.
  •  
  • Bangladeshi male death rate 85 higher than
    national average.

The beginning - 1996
CDA supports the first food co-op in 1996.   Two
new co-ops established with SRB funds in
2002.   Primary Care Grant purchase van in
2004.   Big Lottery 190k grant in 2005.   Sub
contract food purchasing to Community Food
Access.

The Year Ahead
  • Ongoing support for 8 food co-ops.
  • Supply all food co-ops with a weekly delivery of
    food.
  • More demand to establish new co-ops than CDA can
    meet.
  • PCT will not renew funding 2006/07.
  • Six Healthy Eating one day Community Events.
  • Contracting with farmers co-ops to produce food
    for co-ops.
  •  
  • Local Authority 5 year contract to supply fruit
    veg to 20 schools. Potential to expand contract
    to 99 schools in 3 years.

The Bright Future
Support launch of Health Eating School Tuck
Shops.   1 million lottery bid.   Launch
service for local firms (e.g. Swiss Re,
Citigroup, etc) to bulk purchase fruit to be
given free to their staff.   Organic ?   Home
delivery service to elderly, people with
disabilities, etc ?   Olympics ?

Establishing Funding Food Co-ops
  • Identify estate / area.
  • Form partnership with community centre.
  • Research need, health, retailers, find
    volunteers.
  • Training volunteers / staff.
  • LAUNCH EVENT
  • More training and support.
  •  
  • Food Co-ops are not viable businesses but rather
    a community service requiring funding in
    perpetuity.
