Hand Position Drill
  • Hand Position Drill
  • Equipment 1 football, quaterback, receiver (or
    you could just have receivers throw to each
    other)
  • Objective To teach wide receivers how to
    properly catch a football at different locations
    of your body.
  • Directions Quaterbacks throw at the centerline
    of the receivers body. Throw at the knees,
    waist, chest and head.
  • Coaching Points Concentrate on hand position.
    Thumbs down chest high, and above, thumbs up
    below the chest.

    other)
  • Objective To teach wide receivers how to
    properly catch a football at different locations
    of your body and then tuck it into your body.
  • Directions Quaterbacks throw at the centerline
    of the receivers body. Throw at the knees,
    waist, chest and head. After receivers make the
    catch, they must tuck it into their armpit and
    turn upfield.
  • Coaching Points Concentrate on hand position.
    Thumbs down chest high, and above, thumbs up
    below the chest. Make sure there is a cushion
    when they catch the ball. Make sure the nose of
    the football is covered and the other end is
    tucked into the armpit.

    you could just have receivers throw to each

  • Objective This is designed to make receivers
    aware of deflected passes and the determination
    to go after them.
  • Directions Line up facing the quarterback and
    start running at him. The quarterback will throw
    a high pass that the receiver must tip and then
    go up and catch.
  • Coaching Points It is important for the
    receivers to go up and get the ball, rather than
    waiting for the ball to fall into their hands.

  • Hand Position Drill
  • Equipment 5 cones, Stand-up Dummie
  • Objective To teach wide receivers quick feet
  • Directions Cones on straight line 4-5 yards
    apart- Wide receiver comes to cones, sinks hips,
    teaches start/stops- Break down at each cone,
    then up, step on toes of defender- Don't stand
    straight up- End drill with a cut left or right,
    coach will point
  • Coaching Points Concentrate on their feet, make
    sure they break down and dont stand up.

  • Objective To teach wide receivers quick feet and
    getting in and out of their breaks.
  • Directions Getting in and out of breaks-
    Sprint at the cones- Don't drop the hands- Eyes
    and head up
  • Coaching Points Concentrate on their feet, make
    sure they break down, dont stand up, and keep
    their eyes and head up and not looking at the
    ground.

    sure they make the catch first and then get their
    feet in bounds.

  • Objective To teach receivers the speed cut,
    getting out of the cut in 2 yards
  • Directions Receivers go in two lines and run
    routes alternately across each other.
  • Coaching Points Dont loose speed, get head/face
    out of turn, throw backside arm through the
    route.

  • Objective To teach receivers the vertical cut,
    taking one step outside your body to set up
    route.
  • Directions Receivers go in two lines and run
    routes alternately across each other using the
    vertical cut.
  • Coaching Points Dont loose speed, make sure
    they take the step opposite of the route side.

  • Directions Receivers go in two lines and run the
    hard angle cut at each cone in the triangle.
  • Coaching Points Dont loose speed, make sure
    they make their cut in the final two steps. They
    should make the cut with the outside foot of the
    route.

  • Equipment receiver, DB, hand held pad
  • Objective To teach receivers how to stalk block
  • Directions Receivers go in two lines and stalk
    block the DB.
  • Coaching Points Thumbs together near the
    breastplates and the feet chopping. Let DB come
    to you and punch the DBs outside number and
    retreat back into breakdown stance.
