DIVERSITY AND DEFENSE-IN-DEPTH STRATEGIES
Hazardous Condition(s)
Control Systems
Diversity strategies use different means within a
functional barrier to compensate for failures
within the same barrier
Defense-in-Depth strategies use different
functional barriers to compensate failures in
other barriers

Monitoring and Indications
5
BACKGROUND
  • Diversity and defense-in-depth (D3) policy
    established in 1990s
  • Experience to date indicates the need for more
specific guidance for assuring adequate diversity
    and defense-in-depth
  • Research on diversity strategies started in late
    FY 06

6
ISSUE
  • Adding diverse systems and/or defense-in-depth
features can mitigate the effects of a common
    cause failure (CCF)
  • How much diversity and defense-in-depth are
    enough? For example
  • Are there precedents for good engineering
    practice?
  • Can sets of attributes provide adequate
    diversity?
  • Are there standards that can be endorsed?

7
RESEARCH APPROACH
Develop Strategies
Evaluate D3 Approaches
Integrate Into D3 Guidance
8
DIVERSITY STRATEGY REFINEMENTS
  • Select appropriate diversity attributes
  • Identify and classify failure modes
  • Use relative proportions of failure mode classes
to identify appropriate combinations of diversity
    attributes
  • Apply design considerations to select specific
    diversity strategy
  • Classify digital system characteristics
  • Use classes of characteristics to select
    appropriate diversity strategy

9
RESEARCH SCHEDULE
  • Develop diversity strategies
  • July 2007
  • Propose interim NRC guidance
  • September 2007
  • Classify safety system characteristics
  • December 2007
  • Identify failure states
  • CY 2008
  • Issue final NRC Guidance
  • CY 2008
