Title: Basic Parts of the Plant

1
Basic Parts of the Plant
  • VEGETATIVE PARTS
  • Roots
  • Stems
  • Leaves
  • REPRODUCTIVE PARTS
  • Flower
  • Fruits
  • Seeds

2
Functions of Roots
  • 1. Anchor Plant- Hold up
  • 2. Absorb water and minerals
  • 3. Transport water and minerals to stem
  • 4. Store Food (Carrot)

3
Functions of Stems
  • 1. Xylem transports water minerals to leaves
  • Phloem carries food down from the leaves to the
    root
  • Support the leaves and display them to light
  • Store Food

4
Functions of Leaves
  • Leaves make food through photosynthesis
  • Take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen
  • Store food- Onions store food in its leaves

5
Different type of Roots
  • A. Tap Root- Ex. Carrots
  • Has a main or primary root
  • B. Fibrous Root- Ex. Corn
  • -No single primary roots.
  • -Numerous short roots attached to main stem

6
  • Root hairs
  • Tiny one celled hair located near the tips of the
    roots.
  • Absorb water and minerals from soil

7
Specialized Stems
  • C. Tuber (potato, caladium)
  • Short, thick underground stem
  • Food storage area

8
Flowers
  • Help plants in sexual reproduction or
    propagation
  • Produce seeds and fruit
  • The flower ovary becomes the fruit.
  • The eggs or ovules become seeds.

9
Complete and Incomplete Flowers
  • Flowers have four main parts
  • Complete have all four main parts
  • Sepals- protect the young flower (flower bud)
  • Petals- brightly colored to attract insects.
  • Stamens.- Male flower contains anther and
    filament
  • Pistils- Female flower contains ovary, style
    Stigma
  • If a flower is missing one of the four parts, it
    is called incomplete.

10
Parts of the Flower
  • Sepals- usually have the green color of a leaf.
  • Outer covering of the flower bud
  • Protects the stamens and pistils when flower is
    in bud stage

11
Parts of the Flower
  • Petals (a group of petalscorolla)
  • Brightly colored
  • Protects stamen and pistils
  • Attracts pollinating insects

12
Parts of the Flower
  • Stamens
  • Male Reproductive part
  • Anther-produces pollen
  • Filament-supports the anther

13
Parts of the Flower
  • Pistil
  • Female reproductive part
  • Ovary-develops into the fruit
  • Enlarged portion at base of pistil
  • Produces ovules which develop into seeds
  • Stigma
  • Holds the pollen grains

14
  • Style
  • Connects the stigma with ovary
  • Supports the stigma so that it can be pollinated
