Barriers to youth employment
  • Youth have different developmental needs than
    adults and may need more intensive services
  • Youth may be reluctant to enter and use
    facilities designed to serve adults
  • Location and/or hours of operation may be
    inaccessible to youth
  • There may be a clash between youth culture and
    the professional appearance of adults trying to
    help

Strategies to helping youth find employment
  • Partnerships between employers and non-profits to
    help business community assist in preparing youth
    for long term employment
  • Create Youth focused programs that will assist
    youth in gaining employment
  • Providing information to the youth about cell
    phone voice mail messages, appropriate dress, and
    other traditional strategies needed to gaining
    employment.

Workforce Investment Act(WIA)
  • The Workforce Investment Act was passed in 1998
    to create a more effective national workforce
    development system. The legislation established
    a more comprehensive strategy for youth workforce
    development that moves beyond focusing
    exclusively on occupation-specific training and
    places youth development principles at the heart
    of services for youth

Youth eligibility for WIA
  • 14-21 years old
  • Low income
  • One or more of the following
  • Deficient in basic literacy skills
  • Drop out
  • Homeless, runaway, or foster child
  • Pregnant or parenting
  • Youth offender
  • Requires additional assistance to complete an
    education program or secure employment

Job Corps
  • Job Corps is committed to providing young people
    with the education and tools they need to develop
    and sustain meaningful careers
  • Job Corps helps young people learn a skilled
    trade, earn a high school diploma or GED and gain
    assistance with career and job placement
  • Students can enroll for up to 2 years

Americorps
  • Americorps is a network of programs that provide
    community service to local and community
    agencies. Some programs have Americorps members
    work in schools, housing programs, tutoring and
    mentoring activities and disaster response.
  • Volunteers receive a living allowance to cover
    basic living expenses and a voucher to be used
    towards higher education after the completion of
    service.

Civilian Conservation Centers (CCC)
  • Located primarily in rural areas and provides
    young persons with work experience to help them
    conserve, develop, or manage public natural
    resources or public recreational areas or to
    develop community projects

  • SCOTI is a web based application used to post
    current job openings, search for jobs, assist
    employers in recruiting employees, assist job
    hunters in finding employment
