Presidents Message Another summer is almost
over and that means the Washington County
Republican Women will soon resume our monthly
lunch meetings. I hope to see many of you at 1st
VP Susan Recknagels home on September 6 for the
WCRW Membership/Potluck lunch. It is a
membership lunch because we are encouraging each
WCRW member to bring a friend. It is a potluck
lunch because we want to make it inexpensive for
our members to invite guests. However, dont
feel obligated to bring anyone or anything just
bring yourselves, and well be happy to see
you. Former Utah Governor (and St. George
resident) Olene Walker will be the speaker. This
is a great opportunity to hear from a Republican
woman who was the chief executive of our great
state. We will also take a vote on whether the
WCRW as a group should send the Legislative
Committees letter about illegal immigration to
our State Representatives. The letter was
published in last months newsletter and we are
running it again this month, in case anyone
missed it. Be prepared to cast your vote on
September 6.

SEPTEMBER SPEAKER Our September guest speaker is
Olene Walker. Olene spent eight years as a
legislator, 11 years as the states

service. She now lives in St. George and is
currently writing her life history in addition to
a schedule that still includes numerous
activities, boards, meetings and advocating for
causes such as education, affordable housing and
public lands. We are delighted Olene will be
able to attend our September meeting and share
some of her political experiences and
knowledge. The meeting will be a Potluck
luncheon. If anyone would like to bring a dish
(not a requirement), please contact Susan
Recknagel at 628-8703 and let her know what you
would like to bring.

BOOK REVIEW
The Death of the Grown-Up. How Americas Arrested
Development is Bringing Down Western
Civilization By Diana West
Thursday, October 18
In her book The Death of the Grown-Up, Diana
West, a syndicated columnist for the Washington
Times, pulls together the various dysfunctions
and discontents of American civilization by
seeing them as the expression of a unique
historical development, the death of the
grown-up. The demise of the adult has led to
the abandonment of adult virtues and mentalities,
and their replacement by the instant
gratification, impatience with the limits of
reality, and the obsession with the self typical
of the teen-ager. West explains the historical
conditions of the rise of the teen age in the
1950s, the pop-cultural institutionalizing of
rebellion that would bear such bitter political
fruit in the 60s, and the default attitude of
much of American culture, particularly after the
sixties the biggest temper tantrum in the
history of the world and the reaction of the
adult world, which simply gave up and cheerfully
adopted as revealed truths many of the childish
desiderata of that decade. One of Wests
shrewdest ideas is to link multiculturalisms
self-loathing idealization of the other to the
adolescent identity crisis. Our ignorance of
the Wests unique goods enshrined in its history
and traditions has led to a loss of cultural
identity, which would seem to be linked to the
loss of maturity. It seems that just as we have
stopped growing up, we have forgotten who it
was we were supposed to grow up into. At the
same time, we give to non-Western cultures a
groveling respect and timidly acquiesce in their
dysfunctions. This bad habit is particularly
dangerous for the struggle against Islamic
jihad. West concludes with a sobering question
can a culture of children wage war against a
culture of aggressive confidence? With the loss
of the virtues of typical adults, such as
courage, loyalty, and duty with a childish
preference for passive victims rather than active
heroes, one evident in the medias depiction of
our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, what hope of
success can we have? Our refusal to speak
honestly about Islam, our self-loathing, our
eager seeking of the enemys approval, our
constant donning of the hair-shirt of historical
guilt all these immature behaviors hearten the
enemy and weaken our own cause. Diana Wests book
passionately written and clearly argued is a
much-needed shout to America to grow up. And
wed better listen, for as West concludes, It
should now be clear that the civilization that
forever dodges maturity will never live to a ripe
old age. Review by

LETTER TO ELECTED OFFICIALS REGARDING IMMIGRATION
REFORM With the recent failure of the Congress to
fix our immigration system, many states and local
communities are seeking their own solutions. Our
Legislative Committee has drafted a letter to
send to our Utah State Legislators encouraging
them to have Utah enact its own immigration
reforms. The letter recommends that Utah look
at passing legislation similar to Oklahomas
Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007.
(For background information on OK Act, you can do
a search on the internet on Oklahoma Taxpayer
and Citizen Protection Act of 2007.) We will
vote on whether or not to send this letter from
Washington County Republican Women at our
September meeting. Please review the letter and
come prepared to cast your vote. In the
meantime, if you have comments, please contact
either Gail Neuman or Bonnie Harrington,
co-chairs of the Legislative Committee. Dear
Utah Congressperson The Washington County
Republican Women compliment you for your efforts
to receive reimbursement from the Federal
government for the cost to Utah taxpayers of the
presence of illegal immigrants in this state.
This effort is a good beginning, but we also feel
comprehensive immigration reform has become the
responsibility of individual states due to the
Federal governments inability to pass meaningful
immigration legislation. The ultimate goal of
any immigration legislation should be to protect
the citizen taxpayers of this state. Research
shows that illegal immigration causes economic
hardship and lawlessness. Public agencies
provide public benefits without verifying
citizenship status. The current practice of
providing drivers licenses to people without
verifying immigration status impedes and
obstructs the enforcement of federal immigration
law and undermines the security of our borders.
Therefore, it is our considered opinion that it
is a compelling public interest of this state to
discourage illegal immigration by requiring all
agencies within this state to fully cooperate
with federal immigration authorities in the
enforcement of federal immigration laws. Other
measures also seem necessary to ensure the
integrity of various governmental programs and
services. We urge the Utah legislature to take
meaningful action to pass legislation similar to
Oklahomas Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of
2007.
