2 Learning Objectives Determine and explain the
average speed of an object over a given time
interval when the object is moving in a straight
line at constant velocity.
- Using a graphed Best-Fit line, make and test
predictions of how far a moving object will
travel in a specified amount of time. - Understand how graphs can be useful tools in
making predictions about future events.
3At the conclusion of Part 1, you made a
Best-Fit line. Now you can use this line to
make predictions. For your first prediction (an
Interpolation) select a point in between two of
your actual points. Hint It is best to find
where the line intersects a corner. Watch the
following example
4For example - This point predicts it will take
the train approximately 14 seconds to go 55 cm.
5Work with your table partners to make a
prediction based on your graph. Put an X to
represent your Interpolation Prediction point on
the line. Write your prediction under your Data
Table and label it Interpolation Prediction as
shown in the example below. Test the prediction
by doing three trials and determining the
average. Write the actual results under the
prediction then describe how accurate the
prediction was compared to your actual results.
Interpolation Prediction __________
Actual Results __________ (based on average of
three trials)
Description of accuracy (Was it dead on, way
off, slightly off? Explain in 1 2 complete
sentences and refer to your data as your
evidence.) (Click when finished)
6Repeat this process by making an Extrapolation
Prediction Example This point predicts that the
train will travel 110 cm in 28 seconds.
7You should have all of this information copied
under your data table.
Interpolation Prediction __________
Actual Results __________ (based on average of
three trials)
Description of accuracy (Was it dead on, way
off, slightly off? Explain in 1 2 complete
sentences and refer to your data as your
evidence.)
Extrapolation Prediction __________
Actual Results __________ (based on average of
three trials)
Description of accuracy (Was it dead on, way
off, slightly off? Explain in 1 2 complete
sentences and refer to your data as your
evidence.) (Click when finished)
