Title: The Necessity

1
The Necessity Power of Apostolic
PreachingMinistering the Word with Power 1
Mark 634 cf. Matt. 936-37 Jesus knew the power
of the Word. Through the Word all things were
created, formed and filled. God still creates
through his word. Words are at the back of all
things
  • Words change history, words start wars, words
spark revolution, words create things, words
    caused man to fall.
  • There has always been a resistance to preaching,
especially in modern thought (1 Cor 118ff)
  • Discussion, The castrating of authority, body
    ministry, Corruption, Dislike of confrontation
  • Men try to lessen the power of words, they want
    action (cf. Acts 61-7)
  • The ministry of the Word is the heart of the
    body of Christ

2
The Value, Power and Purity of the Word
  • The Word of God is more valuable than the
greatest earthly treasure (Psa. 11972 1910
    Prov. 313-14, 810-11)
  • The Word is more valuable than food (Matt. 44,
    Jer. 1516
  • The Word of the Lord has the seed of true life in
it, and it is eternal (1 Peter 123, Luke 2133)
  • You cannot be born again without the Word
  • Gods Word is sharper than a two-edged sword
    (Heb. 412-13)
  • The Word is like a fire and a hammer (Jer. 2329)
  • The Scripture is able to make you wise for
    salvation (2 Tim. 315, cf. 1 Pet. 19)
  • The Holy Scripture is Gods breathed - it is from
    God and perfect (2 Tim. 316, Psa. 126, 1830,
    197 Prov. 305)
  • The Written Word is useful, profitable and
effective - it teaches, rebukes, corrects and
trains - it equips us for ministry (2 Tim.
    316-17)

3
The Necessity of the Preached Word
  • After Paul explains the power and majesty of
Gods Word, he charges Timothy to preach it (2
    Tim. 41-4)
  • In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus
  • In the presence of God you see what is really
important and valuable, you see what is eternal,
you are able to discern the wheat from the chaff
  • The presence of God stirs us up to preach,
moreover it compels us to preach the Word (Jer.
    209)
  • The outpouring of the Spirit moved the apostles
to preach and the disciples to devoted themselves
    to their teaching (Acts 2)
  • True preaching comes out of a person who is
    eternity conscious
  • Romans 1014-17
  • How can anyone preach unless they are sent?
  • Jer. 2321-22
  • What does it mean to be sent?

4
The Dilemma of Preaching
  • True preaching is a revelation and manifestation
of Christ. It should always lead to repentance
and worship. The preacher is Christs body and
Christ is speaking through Him. The preachers
word is Gods Word and Gods Word is the
preachers Word. Christ Himself is teaching
through the preacher. This type of preaching is
rare, but it is true and apostolic.
  • It is not just what he says, but how he says it
and the life of the messenger that counts.
  • All these questions must be asked - Who? Why?
    What? Where? When? How?
  • It is impossible for man to be true. A preacher
cannot just say true things, he must be the truth
    - the message and the messenger are to be one.
  • If this is the case (and it is!) who is
sufficient for these things? (2 Cor. 216) -
    This is the preaching dilemma
  • Without this Word, there cannot be true faith,
instead only a pseudo-faith. This Word can only
come from God and the man God has sent.
  • John 91-12
