Title: THE SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD

1
THE SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD!
  • BY A GOLD DIGGER

aka
Mrs. Lawson
2
Francisco Coronado
  • Rumors of cities of gold were abundant in Spain.
  • Name an explorer who had already conquered a city
    of gold.
  • Name another explorer who had come to the New
World and discovered a city rich with gold and
    riches.

3
So Where Did Coronado Go?
  • He was in Mexico and he went North.
  • If he went North, where do you think he went?
  • Thats right! He went north into our United
    States.

4
Coronado Reaches Present Day New Mexico
  • What do you think he found?
  • Trust me, it wasnt gold!
  • He did find cities, but the streets were paved
with sun baked clay instead of gold.

5
What Else Did He Find?
  • He found seven broken down adobe-type
    dwellings.
  • Some of the walls were covered with WORTHLESS
    jewels.

6
Coronado Did Not Give Up!
  • He and his men went further north into Texas,
    Oklahoma and Kansas.
  • Did they find gold and riches?
  • No Such Luck!

7
So, Why Do We Care About Coronado? What Did He
Do?
  • He and his men saw many natural wonders.
  • They saw great, open plains covered with grass.
  • They saw enormous herds of buffalo.

8
But He is Really Famous For
  • Discovering the Colorado River.
  • He and his men were probably the 1st white men
to see the colorful Colorado River.
  • Discovering the Grand Canyon.
  • Have you seen the Grand Canyon? Lets take
a trip to the Grand Canyon!
  • And

?
9
He Strengthened SpainsClaims on the New World
  • He claimed the following for Spain
  • Arizona
  • New Mexico
  • Texas
  • Kansas
  • Oklahoma
  • Yah, Like Spain Needed More Control and Power.

10
Did You Know That
  • Coronado and his men left some of their horses
    and cattle behind.
  • These horses and cattle grew into herds and they
roamed the wild west. So, we can give Coronado
credit for introducing horses to the
    southwestern United States.
