What is a rubric?
  • A rubric is a scoring guide that helps you
    evaluate a student's performance based on the a
    full range of criteria.

Why use rubrics?
  • Students have explicit guidelines regarding
    teacher expectations.
  • Teachers can reuse rubrics and modify them for
    various activities.
  • It gives you the teacher a quantitative guide in
    grading student work/performance.

Getting started
  • Decide what you want your students to do
  • Power Point project?
  • Writing a report?
  • Writing a fictional story?
  • Reviewing an article?

  • Decide what out come you expect from the students
  • You want to evaluate what they learned?
  • You want to evaluate their writing style?
  • You want to evaluate their use of voice?
  • You want to evaluate their use of graphics?
  • With a rubric you can evaluate all of these in a
    single assignment!

  • Create your rubric

  • You can browse already created rubrics or
  • you can create a brand new rubric based on
    templates.

  • You have choices
  • You can sign up for an account, which is free and
    allows you to save rubrics on-line
  • You dont have to sign up for an account but you
    can still browse for already created rubrics or
    create your own

To search already created rubrics
  • Click Find rubric
  • Type in your search words
  • You can use and or or to modify your search
  • Look through the rubrics.
  • You can use them directly
  • Modify them for your particular use
  • Use them as a jump start for your own rubric.

Create your own rubric
  • Click Create rubric
  • Choose which style/format you would like to use.
  • Begin creating using their format or modify the
    format as you go.

Saving your rubric
  • At the bottom of the page click on SUBMIT
  • Click on Download
  • Now you can still print as is, save it as a web
    page, or save as an Excel spread sheet
  • Excel is my favorite way as it is easy to modify
    in this format
  • You also can modify and print off line in Excel

Modifying your rubric
  • Read through your rubric one more time to make
    sure it covers all that you want and is clearly
    written for the student.
  • If you want to modify your rubric and it is in
    Excel, just click on the cell that you want to
    modify and do so.
  • Maybe you want to change wording
  • You can also change point value
  • You can also modify it in the web format by
    clicking on the cell and modifying it.

What if no one category does what I want?
  • You can name your own category and criteria
  • You can create several rubrics and merge them
    through Excel
  • Create rubrics sung several categories and save
    them in Excel
  • Choose one rubric to be your main rubric
  • Go to another Excel saved format rubric,
    highlight the cells you want and copy them
  • Go back to your main rubric and past those cells
    in

Using the rubric in the class room
  • Hand the rubric out to each student
  • Go over the rubric, highlighting any categories
    you want them to pay special attention to.
  • Have the students attach the rubric to their work
    when they turn it in.
