• MP3 is a format for compressing digital sound
  information allowing smaller files. It is most
  well know as the format used in the popular iPod
  personal player.

• MP3 is a shortened name for MPEG-1 Layer III,
  which is short for Motion Picture Experts Group
  Audio Layer-3.

• A German company, Fraunhoffer, developed MP3 and
  received a patent in 1989. It was later
  integrated into the MPEG-1.
  
• The International Standards Organization made
  MPEG-1 an official standard in 1992.

• With MP3 data compression files are about 1/12th
  their original size. A 2 minute song that would
  require about 20 megs, about a 56 minute download
  with a 56k modem, will take only 2 minutes.

• Well, not really
• It became very easy to copy music and send it
  over the internet causing which caused much
  wailing and gnashing of teeth with the Recoding
  Industry Associates of America (RIAA).
• By now the RIAA has, through extended legal
  action, shut down most of the free web sights.

• MP3 has survived and is now one of the most
  popular download formats.
  
• The new iPOD will hold up to 10,000 songs.
