1
Designing. . .in the round CTAP 295
Teaching with Technology
  • by Karen Nichols. tahoe4911_at_earthlink.net
  • Art Department Chair
  • Reseda High School, Reseda, CA
  • This is a lesson in COLOR THEORY for high school
visual art curriculum which addresses several
California state standards for the Visual Arts.

2
Expectations
  • At the beginning of this project, I expected to
  • become more comfortable on the Internet.
  • create a web site.
  • prepare a standards-based lesson.
  • learn how to put a lesson on the Internet.

3
Outcomes
  • I learned the following
  • to navigate on the Internet
  • to create a web page using Netscape
  • Composer
  • to link pages and projects
  • to scan and incorporate photos
  • to do graphing with Excel
  • to do a Power Point presentation

4
SuccessesThis project had many successes, as far
as student learning is concerned. The following
were thePROJECT GOALS
  • To make learning fun!
  • Now it can be made more palatable by opening the
classroom door and allowing students to explore
the world through technologyover the Internet.
  • To engage students in learning.
  • Its multi-faceted qualities make this particular
    lesson interesting to most students.

5
More Project Goals
  • To address educational standards.
  • This gives structure and depth to lessons.
  • To address different learning modalities.
  • Visual and kinesthetic aspects have been included.

6
Description of Lesson
  • Students used MATH
  • to divide a circle into 12 equal parts using a
    compass.
  • to divide a circle into thirds, concentrically.
  • Students used SCIENCE
  • to study color perception.
  • To study the qualities of color.

7
Description of Lesson Continued
  • Students used LANGUAGE ARTS
  • by learning art vocabulary, such as
  • primary, secondary, tertiary, intermediate,
    complementary, analogous
  • by learning terms from geometry, such as
  • diameter, radius, circumference, fractions (1/6,
    1/12, ½), concentric
  • Students used SOCIAL SCIENCES
  • in historical contexts
  • mandalas
  • medieval/gothic cathedrals
  • in geographical contexts
  • Chartres, France
  • Nepal

8
Pre and Post Test Comparison
9
SHORTCOMINGS
  • need more computers in the classroom
  • students lack computer skills
  • These are probably obvious and universal
problems inherent with technology in the
classroom therefore, they should not even be
  • considered shortcomings at this time in
history. Time will remedy the situation.

10
Summary
  • This project has made me more aware of the
possibilities for using technology in the
classroom. The computer is a powerful tool, but
the Internet is an exciting outreach medium. It
makes the teacher available at all times in that
the assignment is always available to a student
or to a parent who wishes to assist their child
or just look in on what is happening in the
    classroom.
