Title: Stolen Children in Uganda
1Stolen Children in Uganda
2Africas Longest Running War
- For the past 21 years, the Lords Resistance Army
(LRA) and the Ugandan government have been waging
a war that has left nearly two million innocent
civilians caught in the middle. The Ugandan
government has failed to protect its citizens
from this rebel militia that has murdered mothers
and buried the young, leaving an entire
generation of youth that has never known peace.
3The Root
- The current conflict in northern Uganda has its
immediate roots in the troubled times after
Ugandan independence in 1962, when military
groups of different ethnic and ideological
composition aspired to and often succeeded in
overthrowing a succession of Ugandan governments.
4The Problem
- An entire generation has never known peace. Tens
of thousands of civilians have been mutilated or
killed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in
Northern Uganda for 20 years. Since 1986, the
leader of the LRA, Joseph Kony, has abducted and
brainwashed more than 20,000 boys and girls to
fight as child soldiers in his militia, with
roughly 12,000 abductions occurring since 2002.
5 Joseph Konys LRA
- The LRA did not receive the same support as the
rebel Holy Spirit Movement because of its
extreme tactics. With dwindling support for their
cause and heightened government offensives, the
rebels resorted to abducting children and
indoctrinating them into their ranks. It is
estimated that more than 90 of the LRAs troops
are children.
This organization has been declared a terrorist
organization in the United States

Boy prepares to sleep in a safe refuge for the
night.
8'When the Sun Sets, We Start to Worry...'
portrays the extraordinary resilience
demonstrated by the people of northern Uganda as
they piece together lives disrupted by violence,
and cherish hopes and dreams whose fulfilment
depends on the return of peace to their region.
- This issue has been called the forgotten crisis
in the United Kingdom, even though it has trapped
tens of thousands of innocent people in a cycle
of violence and suffering that seems to be
unending.
