  • Introduction
  • Alka-seltzer is used medically to alleviate
upset stomachs by neutralizing the stomachs
acid. Since Alka-seltzer tablets produce carbon
dioxide, antacid tablets are used in this
experiment. The reaction between Alka-seltzer and
    hydrochloric acid is given below.
  • NaHCO3 HCl g H2O CO2 NaCl
  • antacid stomach
  • acid

6
  • The purpose of this experiment is to provide
enough CO2 gas pressure to force the lid off of a
film canister in a 40 second time frame.

  • Questions-
  • 1. What causes the lid to pop off?
  • Carbon dioxide gas is the product that causes
    the lid to pop off.
  • 2. What is the trick to timing your lid?
  • In the first trial, measure an amount of water
and tablet to be used and time how long it takes
for the lid to pop off. Use the same amount and
start the reaction at the appropriate time. The
lid will then come off at the forty second mark.
  • 3. etc.

8
  • V. Conclusion
  • According to the reaction between Alka-seltzer
and water, carbon dioxide gas is produced. If
the timing of certain amounts of the antacid and
water are used, the desired effect, the lid
flying off, should be accomplished. The desired
    time limit is forty seconds.
  • In the experiment, the Alka-seltzer tablet
failed to produce enough CO2 to pop the lid off
    at the forty second mark.

9
  • Conclusion, contd.
  • Shown in the data, one-fifth of a tablet and
  • ¾ of the canister filled with water was used as
the basis to timing the reaction. In the first
and second trials, the lid popped off at 10
seconds using the same measurements, as
previously mentioned. However, during the final
run, the lid came off at 23 seconds and the time
    limit was exceeded.
  • The errors that could possibly explain the
problem are not placing the lid on properly, not
using the exact amount of materials, and/or
    improper timing of the reaction.
  • With the proper ratio of Alka-seltzer tablet to
water, the films canister could be set to pop
off at the forty second mark.

and clear bubbles. A residue remained on the
surface of the water after the reaction was
