  • What is MPACT?
  • The Missouri Parents Act (MPACT) is a state-wide
  • Parent Training and Information Center. As
    Missouris
  • only PTI, MPACT provides services to parents of
  • children with disabilities
  • Newsletters concerning disability related issues
  • Local, state, and federal resource information
  • Training for parents, schools and other
    professionals
  • Direct assistance to families
  • Website with fact sheets, sample letters, and
    more
  • Disability related bulletin board
  • Located in Kansas City, we also have staff in 6
different regions throughout the state and
    volunteer mentors

Current Transition Curricula
  • Transition to Empowered Lifestyles (TEL)
  • http//www.ptimpact.com/tel/about.htm
  • Partnership between University of Missouri Kansas
City Institute for Human Development (IHD),
    Missouris University Affiliated Program, and
Missouri Parents Act (MPACT) to provide
transition training and information to families
    across Missouri
  • Five modules (each about 3hrs of training)
  • Self-Determination
  • Person-Centered Planning
  • Quality Transition Planning
  • Social Security, Work Incentives, and Medicaid
  • Navigating Systems

3
Benefits of the Curriculum
  • Youth, parents and siblings learn basic
self-advocacy skills and a general understanding
    of self-determination
  • Self-advocates and families have an opportunity
to think differently about how to perceive a
disability by looking toward the future
  • Team approach
  • Materials are readily available for their
    reference
  • Families gain insight into the adult system of
    disabilities supports

4
Challenges of the Curriculum
  • The modules are intended to be offered in a
workshop format across a period of 5 weeks, 5
    sessions/ 3 hrs. each
  • Families have difficulty making this commitment
    due to scheduling conflicts
  • Content is academic-oriented and youth have
    difficulty focusing on it
  • Team approach (parents, siblings, student,
    school)
  • Need more opportunities to practice skills and
    have follow along
  • Developed in 2001 and is now outdated

5
What Are We Doing to Improve?
  • Reorganize the format of the content to be more
    youth friendly
  • Update the content of the modules based on the
    most recent research-based practices
  • Reorganize the length and presentation of the
curricula to provide more flexibility (some
    online support, some face-to-face, more
    opportunities for practice)
  • Revise to supplement other training and
collaboration activities in the STELLAR RSA grant
    project
  • Tool for the Community Transition Teams (CTT)
