This is the HOME slide.

Youre growing every day. Your body is getting
stronger. You are in charge of your body. To
grow up strong and healthy, you need to eat
nutritious foods every day. Nutritious foods also
give you energy for learning and playing.

Nutritious foods are organized into the 5 Food
Groups
Protein Group
Dairy Group
Vegetable Group
Fruit Group
Bread and Cereal Group

To help us remember the groups, we think of the
food groups as a pyramid. We call this the
Food Pyramid. The Food Pyramid is guide to what
we should eat each day.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture developed the
Food Pyramid to encourage people to improve their
diets. It is based on
what foods Americans eat
what nutrients are in certain foods
how to make the best food choices

We need a certain amount from each group, each
day. We call these amounts servings.

the bottom of the pyramid, and fewer servings of
those foods near the top of the pyramid.

The Bread and Cereal Group (Grain Group)
The Bread and Cereal Group, or Grain Group, as it
is often called, is at the bottom of the food
pyramid. Notice that this is the biggest part.
This is because most of what we eat each day
should come from this group.

It is recommended that we eat 6-11 servings
each day from this group.

Foods in this group are made from grains. These
foods include bread crackers

You also need to eat foods from the Vegetable
Group. It is recommended that we eat 3-5
servings from this group each day.

vitamins. Eating 3-5 servings from the

Eating foods in the Fruit Group is also
important. You need 2-4 servings from this group
every day.

Foods in this group include apples

vitamins . Eating 2-4 servings from the Fruit

You also need to eat foods from the Dairy Group.
It is recommended that we eat 2-3 servings from
this group each day.

foods include milk ice cream

Foods in the Dairy Group are rich in calcium.

The fifth group is the Protein Group. Sometimes
it is called the Meat Group. We need 2-3
servings from this group every day.

Foods in the Protein Group contain a lot of
protein. Eating 2-3 servings from the Protein
Group is important... For strong muscles

Fats, Oils and Sweets Category
At the very top of the pyramid is the Fats, Oils
and Sweets Category. It is not considered to be
one of the 5 Food Groups because we should not
eat much from this category. These foods have a
lot of fat, oil and sugar - things that are not
healthy for out bodies.

Where Does My Food Belong?
Now you know that to grow up healthy and strong,
you need to make sure that youre eating the
right foods. That means you need to be sure
youre eating the proper number of servings from
each of the 5 food groups every day.
