TTA Activity and Future Direction
  • Won-Sik Kim
  • TTA President
  • 2008. 07. 14

Submission DateJuly 1, 2008

Highlight of Current Activities (1)
  • IPTV
  • Established IPTV Project Group and 5 Working
    Groups (Mar. 2006)
  • Pre-IPTV Service launched at the end of 2006 in
Korea ? Industry needs for IPTV standards to
    support IPTV Service
  • ? WGs Architecture Scenarios, Middleware
Terminal Device, Mobile IPTV, Security and
    QoS/QoE
  • Established IPTV phase 1 standards in April 2008
  • Minimum specification to support IPTV based on
    legacy IP network
  • IPTV phase2 standardization in process until June
    2009
  • Extension of phase 1 standards and in
    consideration of NGN network

2
3
Highlight of Current Activities (2)
  • IMT-Advanced
  • TTA established IMT-Advanced PG, IMT-WiBro PG and
    IMT-Evaluation PG for IMT-Advanced
    Standardization in Jan 2008
  • Major Activities
  • IMT-Advanced PG
  • Minimum requirements Drafting
  • (reflecting comments of vendors carriers)
  • IMT- WiBro PG
  • WiBro Femtocell
  • Requirements for PS Interworking between WiBro
    and UMTS
  • IMT-Advanced Min. Requirements
  • Coordination among C-J-K in June 2008
  • Common Proposal to ITU-R WP5D(June, Dubai)
  • (IMT.EVAL, Submission templates)

4
Highlight of Current Activities (3)
  • RFID
  • Application Requirement Profile Standards
  • RFID-based Government Property Management Service
    Model (08.3.27)
  • RFID-Based Gaesung CIQ Inspection and Logistics
    Service Model ver.2.0 (08.3.27)
  • CIQ Customs, Immigration
    and Quarantine
  • Mobile RFID Standards
  • Mobile RFID Code and Tag Data Structure
    (06.12.27)
  • Message Transfer Protocol for the Mobile RFID
    Service (05.12.1)

4
5
Highlight of Current Activities (4)
  • New Standard on Integrated I/O Connection
Interface for Mobile Phones (Revised in Nov.
    2007, certified in Jun. 2008)
  • To meet the slimming miniaturizing trend as
well as to increase consumer benefits
  • Estimated cost saving USD 10mil. per year

6
Strategic Direction
  • Strengthen the cooperation between Fora TTA
    Standard Committee
  • In 2008, TTA supports 38 Fora in IT area
  • 60 of 1,317 Forum standards have been directly
    forwarded to TTA committees
  • Strengthen the standards in the IT related
    convergence area
  • u-Health
  • Standardization of u-Health devices and
    information exchange protocols
  • Information security for u-Health services
  • u-Transportation
  • Wide-area wireless communication standard for
    Vehicle-to-Vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure
    Communication
  • In-vehicle network standard

7
Challenges(1)
  • IPTV Standard
  • Limitation of infrastructure in phase 1 which
    doesnt provide interoperability among devices
    and services
  • NGN based or IMS based IPTV architecture
  • Different contents protection specifications
    among service providers
  • Independent POD (Point of Deployment) from IPTV
    end system
  • Interworking between heterogeneous CAS/DRM
  • IMT-Advanced Standard
  • The high-speed air interface protocol development
    for radio resource reduction
  • PHY/MAC and MIMO for 1Gbps at low, 100Mbps at
    high
  • The simplified network architecture for reduced
    network cost
  • User Equipment Relaying, Relay Node, eNode B
  • Candidate 3GPP LTE-advanced, Mobile WiMAX
    Evolution, UMB etc

8
Challenges(2)
  • RFID/USN Standard
  • OID (Object Identifier) for RFID Multi-code
    identification
  • Too many ID schemes not applicable in global
    context
  • Impossible to develop almighty ID scheme for all
    tag-based identification.
  • OID (Object Identifier) standardization for
indentifying various RFID code is required
  • Sensor Network standards for application to other
industries such as Energy, Pollution and
    Transportation
  • Various sensors, hardware platforms and software
make interoperability and portability of sensor
    network impossible
  • To collect sensor data and to manage those sensor
    networks, standard interfaces between
heterogeneous sensor networks and hosts are
    required
  • ? The Interface standardization for Sensor
    Networks is required
