• GPRS (General Packet Radio System) is the
  protocol, or language, GSM networks utilize to
  transmit data over the network
• Has a theoretical maximum data transfer speed of
  84 kilobytes per second
• It is an always on connection in which the user
  in charged by the amount of data transferred as
  opposed to the length of time connected
• Although CDMA 1xRTT technology provides faster
  speeds of up to 114 KBPS, EDGE and other
  protocols are further developing which can exceed
  those speeds

• GPRS provides Internet/ LAN / WAN / VPN
  connectivity to both laptops and PCs through the
  GSM handset itself
• There are many physical means in which handsets
  connect to the PC/Laptop, some are
• USB
• Infrared (IR)
• Bluetooth
• Data cable connected via Serial port

• EDGE (Enhanced Data-Rates for GSM Evolution) is
  the next step in GSM data protocols
• Although no providers have deployed this
  leading-EDGE technology, many providers have
  projected timelines for deployment
• Rogers ATT in Canada will have it ready by March
  2004
