History of Bosnia
  • Bosnia is on the eastern side of Europe near
    Italy
  • It was under Turkish rule
  • It was involved in World War 1 and 2
  • The ethnic groups of Bosnia voted for a
    declaration of Independence

  • With the collapse of communism in 1989 and 1990
    there was a wave nationalism
  • Wanted an independent multinational republic
  • The Nazi rule over Bosnia led to prosecution

Bosnian Crisis
  • The Serbs wanted to annex Bosnia through the use
    of terror and forced evacuation
  • America and other countries didnt want war so
    vast humanitarian force was sent
  • The Serbs would not allow so many troops to
    assemble without a fight
  • The major powers would not bring sufficient power
    to stop the Serbs
  • The Americans were unwilling to die and the
    Europeans to kill in order to stop Milosevic

  • The presence of the UN led to the massacre in
    Serbrencia in July 1995
  • The Serbs took 350 UN peace keepers as hostage
  • Un said no more bombing that they would stick to
    peacekeeping. Hostages were released.
  • Serbs laid siege on the safe havens.

Slobodan Milosevic
  • from Serbia
  • His nickname is Butcher of the Balkans
  • joined the communist party in 1963
  • He earned the nickname Little Lenin while being
    the head of the Ideology of the communist party
  • In 1984 he becomes involved in politics full time
  • People liked his direct style and advocacy of
    Serbian nationalism

  • He was elected leader of the communist party
  • He organizes rallies such like the one in 1988
    The rally of solidarity
  • Through out the fight for independence there was
    a growing force against Milosevic
  • He was constitutionally barred from a third term
    and therefore became the president of the federal
    republic of Yugoslavia
  • In 2000 Milosevic amends the constitution to
    allow him to serve another two terms

  • However Milosevic is forced to step down and is
    then imprisoned
  • Charges are abuse of power and corruption
  • He is accused of smuggling gold bullion out of
    the country
  • He also is accused of arranging the
    assassinations of political opponents

The UNs Role in Bosnia
  • The UN forces came along with the security
    council
  • The UN human rights confirmed grave violations of
    human rights
  • These include rape, concentration camps, torture,
    and large scale murders
  • On the ground soldiers were thin and lightly
    armedand without authority or arms to interfere
  • The security council added arms embargo, a sea
    blockade, and a no fly zone

The war in Bosnia and Croatia will last for three
years The United nations put trade sanctions on
Serbia As war continues militia try to ethnic
cleanse the nation The ethnic groups are held
hostage and used for prisoner trading or where
placed in concentration camps NATO forces a cease
fire Milosevic is held and tried at the
International court in Hague
