Why Defibrillation??

• Most common cause of Cardiac Arrest is
  Ventricular Fibrillation

Why Defibrillation??

• The ONLY treatment for VF is Defibrillation
• Stops all electrical activity for a split second
• Hope that the normal activity restarts
• Very short window of opportunity
• Chance of survival decreases by 7 to 10 for
  each minute that passes

How Does an AED Work?

• Fully automated
• Interprets the rhythm
• Determines if a shock is necessary
• Delivers the shock
• Voice prompts all the way

What is a Public Access Defibrillation Program??

• Make AEDs available in as may areas as possible
• County-wide contract for 1,695/unit
• Provide training
• Local FD or County Fire Services
• Register locations
• At local 9-1-1 center

• 73 AEDs purchased an being placed in public
  buildings in Sept - Oct 02
• 30 more coming in January
• Promoting bizs to start getting involved
• Safeguard employees

• Continue community awareness for AED/PAD program
• ? Considering AED for every 1,000 person
  occupancy
• Improve county-wide survival to 10 by 2005
