Rehabilitation Research
Priority iRehabilitation Robotics and
Telemanipulation Systems Machines Assisting
Recovery from Stroke (MARS) RIC Feinberg School
of Medicine, Northwestern University University
of Illinois Chicago CUA/NRH University of
California Irvine
3- Center Mission
- To evaluate the utility of simple robotic devices
for providing rehabilitation therapy after
hemispheric stroke. - Our broad intent is to develop devices that will
assist the therapist in providing a rationally
based, intensive, and long duration treatments.
4 Issues For Review 1. NIDRR 2. What is an RERC
? 3. What has changed since the original
submission? Lokomat research Life center
at RIC Synergy with RRTC on Stroke
53. What should the advisory do for us? a.
scientific review b. consumer evaluation -
relevance and practicality b. education and
training c. dissemnation plan d. technology
transfer
6MARS-RERC
- Five Projects
-
- Our focus will be on the assessment of four
different approaches towards improving the
performance of the upper extremity, and one
project directed towards restoration of
locomotion.
7Project 1 Development Of A Robotic System With
An Augmented Reality Interface For Rehabilitation
Of Brain Injured Individuals Investigators
James L. Patton, Ph.D. (PI) and Robert Kenyon,
Ph.D. (CO-PI)
8- Project 2 Gait Restoration in Hemiparetic Stroke
Patients using Goal-Directed, Robotic-Assisted
Treadmill Training - Hidler, Hornby (Co-PI).
-
9Project 3 Robotic Therapy for Force Training of
the Upper Extremity in Chronic Hemiparetic
Stroke Kahn (PI), Reinkensmeyer (Co-PI)
10Project 4 Rehabilitation of Finger Extension
in Chronic Hemiplegia Investigators Derek
G. Kamper, Ph.D. (PI) , Robert V. Kenyon, Ph.D.
(co-I), and William Z. Rymer
11Project 5. Home-Based, Telerehabilitation System
for Improving Functional Hand and Arm Movement
Recovery Following Stroke Reinkensmeyer (PI),
Sanchez
12- Education Training Activities
- Masters and doctoral students in engineering and
neuroscience - Medical students residents in PM R, physical
and occupational therapists - Neural Engineering for the Restoration of Human
Function. - Training Grants The RIC houses three federally
funded advanced training programs T32, two AARTs
from NIDRR - Short Term Internships offer four 10-week summer
fellowships - Course from Continuing Education division of the
RIC - Courses will include
- New Technologies For Stroke Rehabilitation
- Quantification of Impairment in Stroke,
13- DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES
- The dissemination activities will be coordinated
by Education and Training Core - A detailed dissemination plan will be developed
over the next 12 months - It will address
- Communication/availability to Consumers/RIC life
center - Distribution to Other Researchers (NARIC)
- Presentations
- Publications
- Grand rounds
- Website Development/Margaret Holzer
- Continuing Education Courses
- Newsletter
- State-of-the-Science Conference (planning has
begun) - Annual Progress Report (completed)
- Calendar
- Other RERC/RRTC interactions
