- The human body has a few many systems that work
together to - help an individual function in life.
- One of these main systems is the
- DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

- Where do people get fuel to have energy
- for playing and working?
- FOOD
- Food is broken down by the
- digestive system and sent to all
- the body parts for nourishment.
4The Digestive System By Sara Silver
- The Digestive System starts
- working as an individual takes a
- bite of some form of food and it
- keeps working for a few hours.
- Digestion is a process that
- allows the body to pick up needed
- nutrients for energy.

- The DIGESTIVE TRACT
- is the key part of the Digestive System.
- The Digestive Tract is
- a tube about 9 meters long and
- it runs through the middle of the body starting
at the mouth and - ending at the anus.

- The Digestion process starts at the MOUTH
- An individual uses his or her teeth to
- bite and chew food.
- The person keeps chewing until the food
- is easy enough to swallow.
-
- Saliva and the food blend together forming
- a moist and slippery mixture.

- Next the food moves through the
- OESOPHAGEUS (or gullet)
-
- This muscular tube transports food from the
throat down into the stomach. - Peristalsis are muscles that work to push the
food down this tube.

- Then the food gets broken down in the
- STOMACH
- The walls of the stomach are made up of
- muscles that smash up the food into a mixture
- that looks like soup.
- Intense digestive juices attack the food and
break it down getting the nutrients out for the
body to use.

- Next the food goes into the
- PANCREAS
- The same strong digestive juices that are made in
the stomach are also made here. - These juices are enzymes that help break down
food even more to get ready to enter into the
small intestines.

- Before the food reaches the small intestines
- another body part has a big job to do first
- GALL BLADDER
- The gall bladder is like a tiny baggy
- and it is under the liver.
- Bile made in the liver, shoots out from
- the gall bladder, travels through bile duct,
- and into the small intestines.
11The digestive systemby Sara Silver
- Next the food enters into the
- SMALL INTESTINES
- The small intestines is a long, narrow tract
- (about 20 feet long).
- In here, enzymes are still breaking down the
food. - At this point, the nutrients are small enough
- to get through the small intestines lining so
they - can get into the blood.

- The next body part in the Digestive Tract is the
- LIVER
- The liver receives blood from the small
intestines that carries nutrients, vitamins, and
minerals. - The liver is in charge of more than 200 jobs.
- The liver holds nutrients then changes their form
so they can be released in the blood for whatever
functions the body needs.

- Next comes the important work of the
- LARGE INTESTINES
- The large intestines absorbs the stuff the body
has not used yet, like extra water and minerals
and puts it back into the blood. - After all this, what remains is brown, semi-solid
waste that need to be taken out of the body.
14The digestive systemby Sara Silver
- The waste that needs to be removed
- from the body goes into the
- RECTUM and ANUS
- The waste is stored up in the rectum, which
- is at the end of the large intestines.
- Then the waste is pressed through the anus, which
is made of muscles, and it is finally out of the
body.
