Control your Settings
  • Check lighting
  • Check shades and blinds
  • Check projector and computer
  • Load Excel and PowerPoint
  • Dont let your technology drive your presentation
  • Erase blackboard / whiteboard
  • Remove obstacles

  • Greet judges
  • Establish eye contact

Opportunity Statement
  • Must give time to digest
  • Not too long
  • Be clear as to goal of presentation
  • Use point form when appropriate
  • Highlight key words for emphasis

Current Situation
  • Make sure you have level 2 explanations at all
    times What does this mean?
  • Be clear on ampleur
  • Growing ? how much?
  • Big ? how big?
  • Use SWOT / Porter / Value Chain to frame content
    but do not present verbatim
  • Plan seed for later in presentation
  • Should be no longer than 2-3 minutes

Decision Criteria
  • Be clear as to what each criteria is
  • Cost
  • Morale
  • Safety
  • Profit
  • Be careful with overlapping criteria
  • (e.g. cost, profit)
  • Be clear on weight and non-negotiable(s)

Alternatives
  • All must make sense given the situation in the
    organization
  • Bring decision criteria through each alternative
    if you can
  • Use point form to explain each alternative
  • Think of hybrids or combinations
  • Use decision tree to build argument when
    appropriate especially when 2 decisions are
    required

Decision Matrix
  • Must be clear on units of measure
  • Polarity (pluses and minuses)
  • Is simply a recap of your alternatives and
    decision criteria
  • Be clear which decision criteria is / are
    non-negotiable
  • If 2 alternatives are close, be clear as to why
    you chose one over the other urgency, impact,
    etc

Recommendation
  • Make sure your recommendation
  • Makes sense
  • Supports/Builds on core competencies
  • Gives them a sustainable advantage over their
    competition
  • Is aligned with their culture
  • Is Simple (not necessarily easy)
  • Is Consistent (not necessarily conservative)
  • Is Bold when and where appropriate

Implementation
  • Have a tomorrow slide when appropriate
    especially when situation is urgent
  • Be clear on ST MT LT
  • (what is the timeline?)
  • Make sure you describe who does what
  • Use statistics when required
  • Incorporate a testing run a pilot phase if
    necessary
  • Have one slide to recap implementation with
    timeline or blocking chart

Finances
  • Should also be integrated throughout the
    presentation
  • (in alternatives and/or implementation)
  • Must support overall recommendation
  • Show at least some of your excel work
  • Have Pessimistic Optimistic values
  • Be ready with walk away value
  • Leave enough time for this

Contingency
  • Only when necessary
  • What if you cannot
  • get the funding?
  • hire the right people?
  • get the necessary support?
  • Should only be one slide
  • Can also be a back-up plan as opposed to an
    emergency plan

  • If not enough time, cut and copy Opportunity
    statement here and recap
  • If more time, recap alternatives, recommendation
    and finances as well
  • Tell audience how excited your team is about your
    recommendation
  • And tell them we look forward to working with
    you in the future

  • Rotate team member who answer if possible
  • Answers should be 30 45 seconds max.
  • Do not over explain
  • Use opportunity to show additional work
  • Clarify and check back when required
  • Need to respond to comments as well as questions

  • Ensure parallel construction
