Committee for Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS)

• Formed in early 1980s as a G7 initiative
• Aim to co-ordinate member-agency space programmes
• satellites payloads launched
• calibration and validation of instruments
• harmonisation of data format, access and delivery
• interaction with major user programmes
• e.g., IGBP, GCOS etc.

DERAs Role

• On behalf of BNSC, provide suitably qualified UK
  delegates
• through contracts with industry academia, and
  from DERA staff
• Disseminate CEOS/CCSDS information
• beginning with bi-annual summer/winter reports
• Ensure information flow between defence and
  civilian activities

• CCSDS generates and publishes standards on behalf
  of ISO
• CEOS co-ordinates the activities of the worlds
  Space Agencies
• Promotes the use of Standards
• Defines new standards where appropriate
