The CCDAWhat is the CCDA?
  • Formed in March of 1982, the Campesino Committee
of the Highlands CCDA- is a rural farmers
organization that works towards the affirmation
of the rights of rural farmers (access to land,
labour rights, human rights, freedom of
organization, and social justice in Guatemala).
We have also helped train rural farmers in many
areas useful for their political organization and
    technical support.

3
Strategic Objectives
  • To promote development in rural Guatemalan
communities, we aim to improve standards of
living through implementing programs and projects
responding to the search for equitable
conditions, and through facilitating the active
participation of the beneficiaries in national
    political, social, economic, and cultural
processes and spaces in order to help build a new
    multi-ethnic, pluri-cultural, and multilingual
    nation.

4
THE CCDAACHIEVEMENTS
  • The Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA)
is a legally established rural farmers
(campesino) organization that has been a partner
in solidarity work with various international
organizations. This has allowed our projects to
    achieve the following
  • Rural coffee producers organized with the CCDA
are currently involved in the transition to
    organic production with the MAYACERT
    certification group.
  • We have gained access to more than 12 farms,
    benefiting some 700 landless families.
  • We are marketing fair trade coffee in Canada
    under the label Café Justicia.
  • We are constructing basic infrastructures for
    coffee treatment.
  • The CCDA currently works with more than 100
indigenous and rural farming communities in 10 of
    Guatemalas departments (provinces). Our
struggle to gain access to land began in the
Highlands, but we have also gained access to
farms in departments outside of this region.

FAIR TRADE PLUSCAFÉ JUSTICIA
  • Café Justicia comes from El Paraiso Cooperative
on the shores of Lake Atitlán in the highlands of
    central Guatemala.
  • It is called Fair Trade Plus because its
standards exceed those of standard fair trade.
  • Producers are paid a rate that is approximately
60 higher than standard fair trade.
  • The coffee is organic (registered with an organic
certifying organization, but has not yet
completed the required three years of inspections
that allow it to receive organic certification)
    and shade-grown.
  • A true Guatemalan treasure, this SHB (Strictly
Hard Bean) Altura coffee has a crisp, robust
flavour boasting notes of mocha and spice.

And the Producersof Café Justicia?
  • They are members of the CCDA who have joined
together to produce, process and market their
    coffee collectively
  • While they have served as low-paid, but skilled
workers on the big plantations for generations,
it is only since 1998 that they have obtained
    their own land to work.

9
A Guatemalan Coffee
  • Café Justicia is cultivated on lands of the CCDA
members , close to lake Atitlán in the Central
    Highlands of Guatemala.

10
  • It is the primary source of income for the
families that grow and process it.
  • An organic Coffee
  • Although it requires more labour, the CCDA
prefers to cultivate Café Justicia organically
    because
  • It protects the health of producers and consumers
  • It protects the environment
  • It reduces the need to purchase external products
and reduces our financial dependence on
    transnationals corporations

11
The Environment
  • We work to conserve the soil of our land through
    crop diversification
  • And shade trees that protect the volcanic slopes
    from erosion
  • These practices also improve the taste of the
coffee, protect biodiversity and guarantee the
    independence of producers
  • The shade trees shelter migratory birds and
provide fruit, firewood, oxygen and nutrients for
    the soil

12
. A FAIR COFFEE
  • A fair price allows the producers and their
families to improve their working conditions and
    standard of living.
  • The CCDA buys coffee from its members but also
provides technical help in coffee production.
  • At the same time, coffee sales fund the various
projects of the CCDA such as the creation of
scholarships for orphans of previous CCDA
    members, community economic development
    programs, housing and micro-credits .

13
IN THE HIGHLANDS HOPE IS GROWING
  • Café Justicia has been developed as an
alternative for small producers to take control
of the production and marketing of their coffee.
It has an agro-ecological focus that strengthens
    the local economy.
