Statistical Weight The previous slides ignored
an important concept that of weight. Not weight
in kilograms but rather statistical weight.
Statistical weights are used to convert sample
counts and/or proportions into estimates for the
larger population being studied. Weights are
assigned (by statisticians) to each individual in
a sample, based on a variety of demographic and
sampling considerations. These weights reflect
how many people a given respondent represents
in the population being studied.
21
In general, you must apply the Statistical Weight
in order to get valid results.

In this case the difference is subtle, but
weighting is essential none-the-less.
Un-weighted
Note the totals with weight on reflect the
population being studied.
Weighted
24
Weighting is key if you want to report raw
numbers though percentages are used more often.
