Types of Disasters

• There are many kinds of natural disasters. The
  most known ones are
• Hurricanes
• Tornadoes
• Severe Thunder Storms
• Earthquakes
• Blizzards
• Floods

Hurricanes

• Hurricanes are swirling masses of wind, clouds,
  and rain
• They form over warm oceans
• Hurricanes can be hundreds of hundreds of miles
  long

Tornadoes

• Tornadoes are funnel wind storms
• The winds can up to 70 miles per hour
• Tornadoes are less than a mile in diameter

Severe Thunder Storms

• Severe Thunder Storms have high winds, lightning,
  and sometimes hail

Earthquakes

• Earthquakes are vibrations due to shifting plates
  inside the Earth that shake the ground
• They can cause mudslides, rockslides, and giant
  waves

Blizzards

• Blizzards are severe winter storms, fast falling
  snow, with 35 mile per hour winds

Floods

• Floods are when an area that is usually dry is
  covered in water
• They are usually caused by rain or melted snow
  that causes rivers, lakes, or streams to flood

How The Government Prepares

• The government tries to help out during natural
  disasters. Some ways they help are
• Teaching people about disasters
• Finding emergency shelters
• Plan ways to warn communities
• Plan routes for people to follow.
• Buy and maintain material and equipment that
  is needed during a disaster

How Volunteer Groups Prepare

• Volunteer Groups also help out when natural
  disasters occur by
• Teaching people how to prepare and respond
• Feeding and comforting people affected by
  disasters
• Help replacing what was lost

How You Should Prepare

• Two of the most important words to know before a
  disaster are storm watch, which means a storm may
  develop, and storm warning means a storm is
  coming.

Preparing for a Hurricane

• If on low lying land evacuate
• Put anything that might fly away inside
• Board up windows
• Keep track of the storm

Preparing for a Tornado

• Do the same things as you do to prepare for a
  hurricane
• Get in a storm cellar or the lowest floor

Preparing for a Severe Thunder Storm

• Stay away from water
• Never swim or boat when you hear thunder
• Make sure you have candles or a light that
  doesn't need to be plugged in

Preparing for a Earthquake

• Stay calm
• Stay away from anything that might fall
• Close cabinets
• Make sure the plumbing works after an earthquake
• Dont eat or drink anything near broken glass

Preparing for a Blizzard

• Stay indoors or in a car
• Stock up on food

Preparing for a Flood

• Prepare to leave and go to higher grounds
• Get anything that could be damaged off the ground
• Make sure you have bottled water

• First aid kit
• Blankets
• Plastic buckets
• Bottled water
• Nonelectric can opener

• Food that doesn't need to be cooked
• Portable radio
• Flash light
• Clothes
• Personal items if wanted
