Coastwatch initiative and GMES

• One of the Thematic projects supported by the
  European Commission, DG Env  Environmental
  stress in Europe 
• Start February 2002
• End May 2004
• Goals
• Provide a European Level Database of the entire
  coast towards coastal erosion at scale 1 100 000
• Compile and analysis lessons learnt from past and
  ongoing shoreline management practices at the
  local level
• Formulate a set of recommendations for designing
  shoreline management policies and enhance coastal
  information management at all levels of
  administration

Eurosion introduction

• Adoption of INSPIRE recommendations for standards
• Metadata documented according to ISO 19115
  standard and ISO 19000 series
• Data harmonised according to EUROSTAT/GISCO rules
  and naming convention
• Interoperable with others existing metadata
  standards (Dublin Core, GELOS, ETC/CDS).

• Design and demonstrate innovative and generic
  technology aimed at developing use of geographic
  information in various application fields, in
  particular to environmental information management

• Coastal indicator service that deliver data for
  environmental stress indicators in European
  coastal areas
• Coastal Land Cover and Land Use Change Mapping
  service that provides maps and indicators for
  monitoring land cover changes
• Coastal Flood Risk Mapping service that supports
  regular monitoring of sea defense based on
  coastal flood risk assessment
• Water Quality Monitoring service that delivers
  near real time and historical maps information
  such as water clarity, sea surface temperature
• Wave Exposure Mapping service that delivers near
  real time and statistical information about waves
  for monitoring state and dynamics of the sea
