The Battle Of The Kursk

Battle
  • The Battle of Kursk took place in July 1943.
Kursk was to be the biggest tank battle of World
War Two and the battle resulted in a severe
crisis for Nazi Germanys war machine in Russia.

3
  • The scale of the war on the Eastern Front was
outrageous . In 1943 the Soviets put 400
divisions into the field to take on some 120
German divisions, more than half of Hitler's
army. The material spearhead of Stalin's
offensive consisted of 8,000 Soviet tanks, 60,000
artillery pieces and the Red Air Force's 5,000
combat aircraft. To hold back the Russian
steamroller, Hitler sent 3,000 tanks, 37,000
artillery pieces and 2,000 combat aircraft to the
    Eastern Front in 1943.

4
The German Army relied on armored forces to push
through enemy lines at high-speed, the famous
Blitzkrieg tactic. This meant they were only able
to assume the offense during the summer when the
Russian summer had dried out the ground enough
for the tanks to be highly mobile.

WOOPS
It was a big mistake for the Germans to think
that they could just ride in to Russia with some
flesh and metal and dominate. When the Russian
army got info of the invasion they started
heavily raining them with artillery. Then they
got the Luftwaffe's for an aerial attack. The
Germans could not move do to the mud and the
mines. The Red Army planted over 400,000
landmines. At that time they surrounded them with
3,600 tanks and obliviated the German army.

45 mm anti-tank gun
A Soviet 152 mm gun fires.
