Title: 11 themes of Biology

1
1-1 themes of Biology
2
The study of life
  • 3.5 billion years ago first life appeared on
    earth
  • Single celled organisms too small to see without
    a microscope
  • Biology - the study of life, studies all living
    things on earth.

3
6 unifying themes
  • Cell structure and function
  • Stability and homeostasis
  • Reproduction and inheritance
  • Evolution
  • Interdependence of organisms
  • Matter energy and organization

4
Cell Structure and function
  • Single celled organisms are unicellular Uni
    1 cellular cell
  • Most organisms that you can see are
    multicellular.
  • Cells are very organized, having specialized
structures to carry out life processes.
  • Differentiation - cells in multicellular
organisms become different from other cells to
carry out specific jobs within the organism.

5
Stablility and Homeostasis
  • Cells need specific environments to live and
    prosper.
  • Cells are able to control their internal
    environments.
  • Homeostasis is the ability to maintain stable
    internal conditiopns

6
Reproduction and inheritance
  • Reproduction is making new organism like the
    originals.
  • DNA is the molecule that stores the information
that makes an organism what it is.
  • Sexual reproduction creates new organisms that
are slightly different than either parent.
  • Asexual reproduction produces an exact copy of
    the parent organism.

7
Evolution
  • Populations of organisms evolve over time
  • Natural selection is considered the driving force
    of evolution.
  • Natural selection states that only the strongest
and most fit organisms survive and reproduce.

8
Interdependence of organisms
  • Ecology is the study of interactions of species
with each other and with their environment.
  • Ecosystems or environmental communities are
    examples of these interactions
  • Many species are dependent on one another for
    food, shelter, etc.

9
Matter, Energy, and Organization
  • All living things are very organized and require
    energy to stay very organized.
  • Autotrophs take energy from the sun to make their
    own food.
  • Heterotrophs consume other organisms for food and
    enrgy.
