Introduction and Welcome

• The Excitement of ISHE
• This is personal!
• Bringing the resources, capacity and capability
  of a leading University to address some of the
  most intractable yet urgent problems facing
  humanity and the planet
• Seeking to integrate and direct our academic
  research and knowledge exchange activities to
  deliver diagnosis and sustainable solutions to
  real world health and environmental problems
• Making UWE itself a more sustainable enterprise
  that uses its intellectual and financial
  resources as a force for sustainable development

UWEs motivation

• What is UWEs motivation? Why are we investing
  our scarce resources
• Because the world is on an unsustainable
  trajectory
• Because the worlds population has unequal access
  to resources
• Because many people in the world have to live in
  a relatively poor state of health
• Because where knowledge of solutions is available
  resources to deploy it are often scarce
• Because we are training the next generation of
  thinkers and leaders
• Because we want to make a difference locally,
  nationally and internationally
• Because from the very top of the organisation we
  believe we should and can make a difference
