Some information
  • The Greek Revival was an architectural movement
of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth
centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and
in the United States. A product of Hellenism, it
may be looked upon as the last phase in the
    development of Neoclassical architecture.
  • Building materials include brick and stone,
particularly for important buildings, but wood
was also used. Early on, wood homes were often
painted white with green shutters. Thin
weatherboard siding was used over a wood frame.

and some more.
  • The Greek Revival dwelling is broad in
proportions, and simplified in details. The
universal image is a monumental two-story temple
front with a pedimented gable (trimmed by
moldings along the base and sloping sides).
Columns may be freestanding or applied to the
façade (front surface). Alternatively, when the
eaves face the street, they are finished with a
cornice and the gable side is embellished with a
    cornice return.
  • The columns makes it look like one story, and
since this is typically style for residential,
    commercial, institutional and governmental
structures, the number of stories can vary. The
White House has 6 stories, for example. The
Capitol Building has 5. Among other examples,
there are the San Francisco Mint and our very own
    Metropolitan Museum of Art.

4
the last bit
  • To express the purity of the Roman arts,
neoclassical structures calls for white exterior.
  • The Greek Revival style was used among the
architects of the American Renaissance movement.
  • The Greek Revival style was used by architect
Benjamin Latrobe in his contributions to the U.S.
Capitol Building, the Bank of Pennsylvania and
the Basilica of the National Shrine of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in
    Baltimore.
