What To Do?
  • Studied Chapters 4 and 16 in Fluency Instruction
    Research-Based Instruction, Timothy Rasinski
  • Explicit, systematic explanation and instruction
  • Modeling and demonstrations of fluent reading
  • Guided oral reading practice on a regular basis
  • Assessment of oral reading fluency progress
  • Students read accessible text repeatedly
  • Small group instruction
  • Sight word review for automaticity
  • Spelling pattern review
  • Intensify and accelerate learning

  • 30 minute sessions
  • 6 students per group 3 groups per school

What We Think We Have Learned
  • Fluency can be explicitly and directly taught
  • Explicit, direct instruction using repeated
    reading, phonic decoding strategy and word work
    on a daily basis over 4 7 weeks has a
    positive effect on fluency rate and accuracy
  • Teacher modeling and corrective feedback are an
    important part of the instructional process
  • Fluency growth is sustained after the workshop
  • With some tweaking the fluency workshop will
    most likely work across grade levels
  • The workshop, as designed, most easily fits into
    an after school program or reading teacher model
