Special Program in Mathematics(SPM)
2
Definition
  • Special program consists of four S-modules in
    mathematics.
  • A student completes the program after he/she has
    passed all four S-modules.

3
The four S-modules
  • MA2108S Mathematical Analysis I
  • Semester 2
  • MA2101S Linear Algebra II
  • Semester 1
  • MA3110S Mathematical Analysis II
  • Semester 2
  • MA3266S Introduction to Fourier Analysis
    Semester 1

4
Taking S-modules
  • A student could take one or more S-modules
    without enrolling in the SPM.
  • A student could audit an S-module if the lecturer
allows. However it will never count towards
taking the S-module, or fulfilling a
    pre-requisite.

5
ComparisonS and non-S modules
  • S versions of essential modules (for Math and
    Applied Math majors)
  • Runs parallel to non-S versions.
  • Same syllabus and timetable.
  • Separate lectures, lecturers, test, tutorials and
    exams.
  • 1 additional tutorial per week. 1 additional MC.
  • Deals with theory (ie lots of proofs!).

6
Students
  • Intake up to 15 per year
  • Strong passion and aptitude
  • For Math, Applied Math majors
  • Also QF, Statistics, CS, Physics, Engineering

7
Benefits
  • SPM room ready in mid February 08.Only for SPM
    students.
  • Small class (very costly to the Math dept.)
  • Top lecturers.
  • Mentorship program.
  • Recommendation letters.

8
More Benefits
  • Less Tangible benefits
  • Greater depth and sophistication.
  • Do better in other mathematics modules.
  • Learning together with other keen students.
  • Enjoy learning.

9
Downside?
  • I do not know any.
  • Suffer in grade?
  • No grade distribution.
  • Can opt out later after one semester.

10
How to enroll in SPM or S-modules?
  • Go to the Department of Mathematics homepage
  • http//ww1.math.nus.edu.sg
  • Download, fill in and return an application form.
  • Indicate the S-modules you want to take in the
    coming semester.
  • Wait for our reply and instructions. May need an
    interview.
  • Bid for your non-S version modules as usual.
  • We will put you into the S-module of your choice
    once we approve your application.

11
General guidelines for approval
  • A student has to show the potential to get at
least an A- for the S-module.This includes a
willingness to commit time and effort to the
    S-module.
  • If CAP gt 4.5, then no question asked.
  • If CAP between 4 and 4.5, then we will interview
    and ask a few questions....
  • If CAP lt 4, then we will interview and ask many
    questions....

12
Plan B
  • What if I find the S-modules too tough?
  • You may drop or switch to the non-S version
within Week 1 to Week 4.
  • After Week 4, we follow the usually NUS procedure.
