QA 53 Offences including Plagiarism
5
QA 53 Examination and Assessment Offences
  • fabrication, e.g. reporting on experiments never
    performed
  • falsification, e.g. misrepresentation of the
    results of experimentation
  • plagiarism, i.e. taking the writings or ideas of
another and representing them as one's own
  • duplication of one's own work, i.e. submitting as
if for the first time and without
    acknowledgement, content which has previously
    been assessed.
  • unfair collaboration or collusion i.e. the
representation of work produced in collaboration
with another person or persons as the work of a
    single candidate.

6
Plagiarism
  • Plagiarism is when the student copies data,
information or results from an unacknowledged
source, without quotation marks or any indication
that the presenter is not the original author or
    researcher
  • Work (text, diagrams, photos and graphs)
produced by someone else may be summarised or
repeated providing it is referenced to the
    original author
  • Full reference for both quotes and paraphrases or
summaries of published material must be given
  • All references should then be included in a
bibliography at the end of the piece of work
including URLs of web-based material (and date of
    visit)

An example
  • Read the extract below,  which is taken from page
    96 of Arnold, J., Cooper, C.L. and Robertson, I.
    (1995) Work Psychology, London Pitman
  • There are a range of problems faced by minorities
in the workplace.  First, the selection and
recruitment process is biased against them in one
form or another.  Second, they have very few role
models in the work environment, who could mentor
them and socialize them towards organizational
life.  Third, they do not get the feedback they
need in terms of performance appraisal to guide
them through the turbulent waters of their
    careers.

  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • Yes. Copy that is correctly cited but not in
    quotes.

Example C
  • There are a range of problems faced by minorities
in the workplace.  First, the selection and
recruitment process is biased against them in one
form or another.  Second, they have very few role
models in the work environment, who could mentor

need in terms of performance appraisal to guide
them through the turbulent waters of their
    careers.
  • There are a range of difficulties faced by
minorities at work.  First, the selection and
recruitment process is biased against them in
some way.  Second, they have few role models in
the organisational context, who could mentor and
    socialise them regarding organisational life.
Third, they don't get the feedback they need on
their performance to guide them through the
    choppy waters of their careers.
  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • Yes. The text has been altered slightly and not
    cited or in quotes.

Example D
  • There are a range of problems faced by minorities
in the workplace.  First, the selection and
recruitment process is biased against them in one
form or another.  Second, they have very few role
models in the work environment, who could mentor
them and socialize them towards organizational
life.  Third, they do not get the feedback they
need in terms of performance appraisal to guide
them through the turbulent waters of their
    careers.
  • Arnold et al. suggest that " There are a range of
problems faced by minorities in the workplace.
First, the selection and recruitment process in
biased against them in one form or another.
Second, they have very few role models in the

terms of performance appraisal to guide them
through the turbulent waters of their careers."
  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • Yes. The text has been altered more (words and
order) but it is still a paraphrase of the
original and, although it says Arnold et al. this
    is still not properly cited

Example E

  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • No. The text is in quotes and the reference is
    clear.

Example F
  • There are a range of problems faced by minorities
in the workplace.  First, the selection and
recruitment process is biased against them in one
form or another.  Second, they have very few role
models in the work environment, who could mentor
them and socialize them towards organizational
life.  Third, they do not get the feedback they
need in terms of performance appraisal to guide
them through the turbulent waters of their
    careers.
  • Minorities of whatever sort are presented with a
number of difficulties in the organisational
    context.  For example, performance appraisal
often does not meet their needs in terms of
providing guidance on career development.  The
ways in which organisational personnel are
selected and recruited are often characterised by
racism, sexism, homophobia etc.  Finally, the
lack of people of colour, women and other members
of minorities in senior positions often mean that
those lower down the organisation cannot get the
mentoring and socialisation they need at work.
  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • Yes. Although the changes are substantial, all
the 3 key ideas come from the original and this
    is not cited.

  • Do you think this is plagiarism? Yes / No
  • No. There is a clear citation to the source and
the text has been rewritten so quotes are not
    needed.

15
Consequences
  • Punishments range from a note in your file to
zero marks to no credits which will be a FAIL
  • It is your responsibility not to make mistakes
since mistakes can incur the same penalties
  • If in doubt,reference and/or consult

16
Conclusion
  • If you have got the ideas from sources, and this
    is normal and usual, either
  • Quote ( and ) and cite OR
  • Paraphrase and cite
  • If the ideas are really your own (such as a
synthesis from extensive reading) or in the
public domain no citations are needed.
  • If in doubt, cite
