Title: Needed Preaching

1
Needed Preaching
2
Introduction
  • Over the past 50-75 years there seems to have
been a shift in the preaching styles of most
    Christian-type churches.
  • Even among the various denominations, there was a
strong respect and expectation for strong, solid
    preaching from the pulpit.
  • Today, soft preaching appears to be the order.
Touchy-feely types of sermons that dont offend
    seem to be the favorite.

3
Introduction
  • It should be our desire to appeal to the patterns
that have been left for us in the pages of
    recorded, inspired history.
  • Especially when it comes to preaching!
  • Our preaching today should reflect the image of
preaching that we see in the New Testament.
  • New Testament preaching consisted of

4
1. Cut-to-the-Heart Preaching
  • Acts 751-60
  • stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and
ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit ...When
they heard these things they were cut to the
heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
  • Oh to bring a godly message that would prompt
such a response in this day!
  • We need preaching that cuts through the smoke of
emotional appeal and reaches the depth of the
    heart!
  • Acts 214-39 they were cut to the heart

5
2. In Season and Out of Season Preaching
  • 2 Timothy 41-5
  • Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of
    season
  • Sometimes preaching is popular and embraced,
sometimes it is very unpopular and violently
    rejected.
  • Regardless of the mood of the hearers, we must
    PREACH ON!
  • There is never a time to let up in our preaching!

6
3. Reproving, Rebuking, and Exhorting Preaching
  • 2 Timothy 41-5
  • ...Convince, Rebuke, exhort with all
    longsuffering
  • Convince/Reprove Strongs 1651 Tell a fault
  • Rebuke Strongs 2008 straightly charge
  • Exhort Strongs 3870 to call near, beseech
  • Proper preaching must include all three!
  • With longsuffering and teaching right
attitude behind the message is vital and
    biblical.
  • Speaking as a preacher, the balance is difficult.

7
4. World Turning Upside Down Preaching
  • Acts 171-6
  • When I think of the world turning upside down
today, I cant help but think of the decline of
moral and ethical values in our society.
  • The world is turning upside down the wrong way!
  • We need powerful, media-driven preaching that
will be heard by the masses!
  • Although it is beyond our comprehension, now is
the opportune time for another great Restoration!

8
5. Bold Preaching
  • Philippians 114
  • and most of the brethren in the Lord, having
become confident by my chains, are much more bold
to speak the word without fear.
  • Bold Strongs 5111 Daring, Durst
  • Vines says, to dare or do, or to bear,
    something terrible or difficult
  • We need preachers today that possess the daring
character that says, Ill preach the truth no
    matter what the consequence!
  • I pray for boldness!

9
6. Public and Private Preaching
  • Acts 2017-20
  • and taught you publicly and from house to house
  • New Testament preaching is both!
  • As a public speaker, I would say that the most
challenging of the two is the house to house.
  • I would also say it is the most important!
  • Public Pulpit, Radio, TV, Print, etc.
  • Private Face to face, kitchen tables, heart to
heart, sharing the shedding of tears, etc.

10
7. Understandable Preaching
  • A lot of preaching today cant be understood by
the average person sitting in the pew.
  • Bible preaching must be understandable!
  • Ephesians 517
  • Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what
the will of the Lord is.
  • Ephesians 34
  • when you read, you may understand my knowledge
    in the mystery of Christ.
  • 2 Corinthians 113
  • the simplicity that is in Christ

11
8. Christ Centered Preaching
  • 1 Corinthians 151-6
  • Acts 85
  • Then Philip...preached Christ to them.
  • Acts 835
  • Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at
this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.
  • Christ, Christ, Jesus Christ! This ought to be
the focal point of every sermon! It all centers
    around Christ and Him crucified!
  • 1 Corinthians 22 For I determined not to know
    anything among you except Christ...

12
9. Soul Searching Preaching
  • 2 Corinthians 131-5
  • Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the
faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know
yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?
  • Good preaching will cause the hearer to take a
look at his/her self in all the aspects of life
and ask the question, Is Christ living in me?
  • Boring, unmotivating messages fall well short of
New Testament preaching when one does not give
    self-examination afterwards.

13
Conclusion
  • Preaching that is needed today is not a revamped,
made for the 21st century type preaching.
  • Preaching that is needed today is simple, New
Testament preaching that is mirrored by the
    preachers of the 1st Century.
  • When it comes to this type of preaching, it cant
    be improved!
  • God help me to preach Gods way.
