Title: RoHS Update
1RoHS Update
2RoHS ConversionOperational / Logistical Strategy
- Operational Strategy
- The transition to lead-free platings have been
pro-actively driven through product conversion
and has been communicated to our Customers and
Distributors via standard Product Change Notice
(PCN) system (2001 - 2004). - Conversions have occurred by package type
groupings. In cases where like packages are also
manufactured at subcontractor locations, we
worked closely with our subs to align the
conversion schedules. - With the exception of TSSOP (Hi and Lo) and BGA,
all conversions will be completed by mid July
2005 (WW30).
3RoHS ConversionOperational / Logistical Strategy
- RoHS Shipping Package Labeling
- Phase 1 Approach (current) Words LEAD FREE
added to all reels and inner packing boxes.
4RoHS ConversionOperational / Logistical Strategy
- RoHS Shipping Package Labeling
- Phase 2 Approach - Adopt JESD97 labeling
standards. The required Peoplesoft changes to
accommodate this change have been made and
implementation is expected by Q3FY05. - Second label will be required in most cases due
to space limitations. - Two types of labels 1) Type 1 for packages
with Pb-containing die attach but with Pb-free
lead finishes, and 2) Type 2 for totally
Pb-free devices.
Pb-Free Classification Category
- Label Option 1 To be used for devices with
Pb-free platings but with Pb-containing die
attach. - Label Option 2 To be used for totally Pb-free
devices

- RoHS Part Marking
- Change date code year designation from numeric to
alpha character
7RoHS Conversion Ordering Strategy
RoHS ConversionOperational / Logistical Strategy
- RoHS (Lead Free) Part Ordering Today
- Customers that order against the basic part
number will get leaded or RoHS compliant product,
depending on the factory conversion date per the
PCN. - For customers that must have lead free, orders
should be placed to the _NL device. - Customers that required the original leaded part,
must order the basic part number with the _Q.
not all devices have an _NL equivalent part.
_NL parts are NCNR.
_Q parts will not be available for all FCS
devices.
8RoHS Conversion Ordering Strategy (Cont)
- RoHS (Lead Free) Part Ordering with Product Alias
- (planned for early July 2005)
- With Product Alias, Customers may order RoHS
compliant parts using either the basic part
number or the _NL part number and they will
receive Lead Free product. - Prototype is expected by June 6th with production
by July 1st. - _NL will not be a unique part number and we will
drop the NCNR restriction for our Distributors.
- For customers that require leaded parts
- Leaded parts will contain the _Q suffix
following conversion to RoHS complaint parts. - Parts will remain available until FCS inventory
is depleted and/or manufacturing capacity is
unavailable for continued Pb builds.
_Q parts will not be available for all FCS
devices.
9RoHS Conversion Ordering Strategy (Cont)
- Leaded Part Ordering
- How long should FSC continue to offer leaded
product? - Our original strategy was to support leaded
product demand with _Q product for 3 months
following base part conversion to lead free. This
presented a problem for several customers,
particularly networking, telecom and automotive,
since they were not driven to comply with the
RoHS standard due to a product exemption. - Our revised strategy is to support leaded demand
via _Q devices until September 30, 2005 at no
added cost to customers providing that
operational capability and capacity exists .
Beyond that date, we will continue _Q device
support for select strategic customers with a
cost adder. _Q product will not be returnable
(NCNR).
an equivalent _Q device does not exist for
every base part.
10Summary
- Fairchild will convert all basic marked devices
to lead free packaging but with a unique date
code scheme. - For customers with unique part number
requirements, lead free product may be ordered
using the _NL part number. - For customers that require leaded product, they
will need to change their BOM to call out the _Q
Fairchild part number. - We expect to be totally converted and shipping
only fully RoHS compliant product by the end of
September 2005. - We will host another status update with you for
early July to review the Product Alias in more
detail.
