Introducing e-MPDS
  • The IMechEs Monitored Professional Development
    Scheme

2
Introducing e-MPDS
  • Promotes better and more consistent application
    of UK-SPEC
  • Ease of monitoring, regardless of engineering
    discipline
  • Removes administrative burden of paperwork for
    companies
  • Assists company performance review, shows
    progression
  • No company investment in IT infrastructure or
    software
  • Easier monitoring more frequent less reason
    to fall behind
  • Delivers better value for money for company
    training costs

3
Creating e-MPDS Records
  • Use the system in its simplest form
  • - Go straight to Reports tab Cut paste 500
  • words, press save
  • - This simple format is recommended if you are
  • falling behind
  • OR use the optional tools
  • - Submit a Plan then Submit Evidence
  • These auto-map to Quarterly report Annual
    Report
  • checksheet
  • OR
  • Use a combination of both methods from
  • time to time

Competences
  • Competences are developed through 4 levels
    during
  • Initial Professional Development (IPD)
  • Level 1 Aware
  • Level 2 Familiar
  • Level 3 Skilled
  • Level 4 Expert
  • Progress against each competence is evaluated by
    the mentor
  • during IPD and by the Panel at Professional
    Review interview.
  • CEng and IEng require a minimum score of 3
    competences at
  • Level 3 and 2 competences at Level 2, with all
    competences
  • weighted equally

11
Developing Engineers Record 1.Check My Status
for IEng/CEng 2.Go to help for tips 3.Your
Notice Board tells you when plans and evidence
are returned 4.Go to EC UK-SPEC for examples of
competences 5.Ask your mentor to insert your MPDS

Submit Evidence against Plan 1.Use a title you
will recognise easily 2.Give a brief outline only
3.Add UKSPEC from the menu selector 4.Dont
upload sensitive items 5.Include several
activities to reduce the sign off time by the
mentor
16
Evidence auto-maps to checksheet This gives
at-a-glance gap analysis. Useful if a
new mentor is appointed. Useful for
other managers to view progress If not
scoring evidence, an x appears x competence is
relevant but not scored 0 competence not
relevant to this activity
17

Practical tips for e-MPDS
  • BEng or non-accredited degree?
  • - decide if you are going IEng route to
    registration
  • - or, decide if you are completing Further
Learning whilst on MPDS for the CEng route to
    registration
  • - lodge your Further Learning Plan immediately!
  • Download a copy of UK-SPEC
  • - if applying IEng route, email MPDS_at_imeche.org
to change your competence chart in e-MPDS

23
Practical Tips for e-MPDS
  • Update your contact details with IMechE
  • Advise IMechE of changes to mentors or transfers
    from your workplace
  • Use a common sense approach
  • read the user guide and FAQs before commencing
  • develop an understanding of UK-SPEC
  • create items in order (eg a plan before creating
    evidence)
  • dont upload commercially sensitive evidence
  • dont overload the mentor with lots of items of
    evidence
  • scoring evidence is optional
  • use the help pages within the online system

24
The CEng competences
  • A. Use a combination of general specialist
  • mechanical engineering knowledge and
  • understanding to optimise the application of
  • existing and emerging technology
  • B. Apply appropriate theoretical and practical
  • methods to the analysis and solution of
  • mechanical engineering problems
  • C. Provide technical and commercial leadership

25
The CEng competences
  • D. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills
  • E. Demonstrate a personal commitment to
  • professional standards, recognising
  • obligations to society, the profession and
  • the environment

26
The IEng competences
  • Use a combination of general specialist
    mechanical
  • engineering knowledge and understanding to
    apply
  • existing and emerging technology
  • B. Apply appropriate theoretical and practical
    methods to
  • design, develop, manufacture, construct,
    commission,

31
e-MPDS Questions ?
  • Q A session
  • Followed by Further Learning session
  • - For those without the exemplifying
qualifications for CEng set by the Engineering
    Council
  • for all scheme administrators
  • for all mentors, or
  • those who may mentor people in the future

31
32
Understanding Further Learning
  • Further Learning is in addition to your usual IPD
  • - explore opportunities - broaden business
knowledge, then prepare a report on your learning
    outcomes
  • Option Upload reports in e-MPDS as way to save
    evidence
  • - DO NOT add the UK-SPEC competences
  • - Mentor assesses FL report as evidence for
meeting academic requirements only (ie NOT
    scoring for competence)
  • - Assessment is about your further knowledge
    understanding of a subject area

32
33
Further Learning - Assessment
  • Criteria for assessing work based learning
  • - Technical and non-technical understanding
  • - Development of principles and ideas
  • - Application of principles
  • - Use of theory and use of analytical methods
  • - General broadening of knowledge and
    understanding

33
34
Further Learning - Assessment
  • For example
  • - By producing a series of reports to show
    learning outcomes
  • understanding theory and principles
  • technical reports to show analysis and outcomes
  • presentations to peers to disseminate your
    knowledge and understanding

34
35
Further Learning _ Assessment
  • work based learning - assessed by
  • - Senior personnel in the company Technical
Specialists persons with academic experience (eg
visiting industrial lecturers) CEng or IEng
    Mentors
  • - Applying the criteria for the assessment of
learning outcomes as per previous slide

35
36
Further Learning for CEng
  • If devising an individual route to meet FL, x2
Key Requirements need to demonstrate additional
    learning against QAA Level Statements
  • 1) Broadening of knowledge
  • identify wider aspects of technical learning that
    may be available at work
  • through secondment, seminars, lectures, courses
  • plan these activities in a Further Learning Plan
  • record achievement of wider knowledge deeper
understanding by formal reports, peer review etc
  • all reports to be formally assessed by your
Mentor or an appropriate senior person in the
    company

36
37
Further Learning for CEng
  • 1) Broadening of knowledge cont
  • project management exploring or researching
ethical and legal issues cost optimisation
quality management make or buy decisions
product marketing involvement in customer and
    supplier relationships etc
  • additional courses/seminars at universities and
    colleges
  • voluntary work and projects (eg engineering in
    schools) will demonstrate some transferable
    learning and skills
  • identify, plan, record and have these activities
    assessed

37
38
Further Learning for CEng
  • 2) Deepening of Knowledge in Engineering
    Scientific areas
  • this is a key component - must be clearly spelled
    out
  • for most recent graduates, it is gained through
University MSc modules (for few individuals, this
may be gained through deep involvement in
    assessed work-based projects and research)
  • your plan should clearly outline the deeper
knowledge and understanding that will be gained
use the module descriptor for this purpose
  • must be at Masters level for CEng
  • Must be at Bachelors level for IEng

38
39
Further Learning for CEng
  • For those with Accredited BEng(Hons)
  • academic Assessment is not required
  • go straight to a Further Learning Plan
    immediately
  • show how you intend bringing learning up to
Masters level to meet the QAA level statements
    through a combination of
  • broadening knowledge in both technical and non
technical areas Bachelors or Masters level
  • Deepening of knowledge in Engineering
    Scientific areas - Masters level

39

Top Tips for your FL Plan
  • You can use MPDS reports as the nucleus for
producing a Further Learning report to expand on
    your knowledge and understanding gained
  • Look for opportunities in the company to broaden
your understanding of the business and
    engineering practice
  • Say how you will report on these activities, to
    demonstrate various learning outcomes, for
    example
  • - one to one review with CEng mentor and Line
Manager to present your learning outcomes
followed by a written formal report to include
cost management of the project plus 2
presentations to peer groups. These will be
assessed by my mentor using the following
    criteria.

41
Top Tips for your FL Plan
  • show the assessment criteria to be used
  • eg theory, analysis, applying engineering
    principles
  • the difference in learning outcomes between BEng
level broadening and deeper Masters level topics
    must be clear
  • acknowledge that your FL reports are outside of
your normal work this shows you understand FL
is in addition to professional development
  • give a realistic timeline to complete the plan
  • For example I will extend MPDS to complete my
plan, but will endeavour to complete the plan
    earlier, depending on work constraints
  • this shows you have thought about a contingency
    if things go wrong
