Title: Low Emittance Transport: Update

1
Low Emittance Transport Update
  • PT
  • 06-June-2006
  • Accelerator Design Meeting

2
Preparation for Snowmass
  • What we would like to have completed in time for
    Snowmass
  • Multi-stage BC study
  • Scarecrow lattice from BC to IP
  • MPS HAL catalog of single-bunch or single-train
    damage scenarios
  • Examination of straight vs piecewise-straight vs
    continually curved main linac
  • Mode-rotation HOMs

3
Snowmass BC Study
  • Completed study on 7 first-generation (G1) BC
    candidates
  • Eliminated 3 G1 BCs, consolidated remainder into
    1 G2 BC with 4 configs
  • Completed brief study of G2 design
  • Will soon start Snowmass-ready G3 design (more
    stuff needed for tuning sims)
  • On track to have a candidate design in hand at
    Snowmass

4
Snowmass Scarecrow
  • Identified decks we want
  • BC
  • linac?250 GeV
  • linac from 250 ?500 GeV or bypass line
  • BDS (20 mrad)
  • vertical arcs at 250 GeV and upstream BDS
  • Spanning parameters document (bunch lengths,
    gradients, IP parameters)
  • Started with linacs and VARCs
  • On track to be completed by Snowmass

5
Snowmass MPS HAL
  • Not yet started
  • waiting for key players (TMH, MCREC, PT) to all
    be available simultaneously
  • Hopefully this week we can begin
  • Dont know if this gets done by Snowmass

6
Snowmass Linac Shape
  • Straight no-brainer
  • weve been studying that all along!
  • Piecewise-straight
  • VARC deck in hand
  • Will be able to study linac steering with VARC
    soon
  • anticipate no problems
  • Continuously curved
  • European ILCer promised to study this
  • No evidence of progress yet
  • Conclusion straight and piecewise straight OK
    for Snowmass, curved probably not

7
Mode-Rotation HOMs
  • Beam offsets in X can drive LRWF deflections in Y
    iff
  • X and Y dipole frequencies are not equal, and
  • Mode orientation is not upright wrt the
    accelerator coordinates
  • Some potential for emittance growth from this
source, esp. if there is a rogue mode
  • Hope to have a definitive statement on what to do
    to manage this by Snowmass

8
Other Activities
  • Linac steering/tuning simulations
  • J. Smith (Cornell) looking systematically at DFS,
    BA, Kubos method
  • K. Ranjan (FNAL) looking at DFS vs quad spacing
  • Lucretia (LET Simulation package)
  • First version released on April 23
