1
RIVERS AND COASTS
  • By Michael Robertson

2
What exactly is a river.
  • A river is a natural stream that flows into a
    channel or a mouth

3
The source of a River
  • The source of a river is where the river starts.
Some rivers start where water flows out of a
rock. Or sometimes the water cant sink so it
    forms a bog.

4
This is a source of the severn
5
Tributary
  • A tributary is were a river or a stream flows
    into the main river
  • A river grows bigger the larger amount of
    tributarys

6
The Water Cycle
  • Here is a picture of a water cycle .

7
Movement of the river
  • Here is a picture of the Severn river moving. The
picture below is rapids, they move fast.

8
Information about rapids
  • Rapids move very fast. They form in shallow
waters and flow over rocks extremely quickly.
Rapids form in a similar way as waterfalls. Below
    a picture of rapids.

9
Waterfalls
  • Waterfalls form where the water cant flow
through over the hard rock so it flows over the
top of it. The soft rock is eroded over time. The
water flows into the plunge pool at the bottom.

10
Meanders
  • A meander is were the river curves round
  • Meanders can flow to grow big which also forms
oxbows which is on the next slide
  • Below is are some meanders

11
Oxbows
  • Oxbows form were the river is meandering along.
The meander gets bigger and forms an oxbow loop.
Eventualy the loop cuts through the bank of the
loop to form a oxbow lake.
  • The stages of Oxbow.

12
deltas
  • Deltas are were the river flows in to the sea

13
Coasts
  • A coast is the edge of land where it meets the
sea or ocean. They are formed when the sea
    crashes against the cliff face.

14
Erosion
  • Here is a picture of a cliff being eroded.

15
Erosion
  • Erosion happens over thousands over years here is
    a diagram.

16
Headlands
  • Headlands are formed when the sea erodes the
softer rock and leaves the hard rock standing.

17
Caves
  • The softer rock gets eroded by the crashing waves
of the sea and eventually hollows out.
