- The International Student Office is the only
office in the University that can give
immigration advice. - We can give you advice and information about
- Registering with the police
- Visa extensions
- Visa corrections
- Inviting your family
- Travelling overseas from the UK
- Working during and after your studies
- Please do not take immigration advice from your
friends!

- If you have a question about immigration, please
bring your passport to the International Student
Office. - We will
- Answer quick questions at the enquiry desk
- Make an appointment for more detailed,
confidential advice - Immigration procedures can take a long time so
please dont leave your questions until the last
minute.

- Extending your visa
- The most important thing to remember about
immigration is the date your leave to enter or
remain (your visa) will expire. - It is illegal to stay in the UK after your visa
has expired. - You must make an application to the Home Office
to extend your visa before it expires. - Come to the International Student Office about 6
weeks before your visa expires. - If you realise that your visa has already
expired, come to the International Student Office
immediately for urgent advice.

- Visa Correction Service
- Student visas are usually granted for duration of
course plus four months - If your visa is shorter than this, there may have
been a mistake - The International Student Office may be able to
help to get the mistake corrected - Please come and see us after Christmas if you
think your visa is incorrect - Immigration information is on page 13 of your

- (non-EEA citizens)
- Depends on endorsement in passport
- Prohibition (employment prohibited or must not
engage in employment paid or unpaid ) - Restriction ( authorised by the Secretary of
State) - 20 hours per week in term time
- Full-time in University vacations and when course
is completely finished - If you are not sure, bring your passport to

- National Insurance (NI)
- paid if you earn more than 100 per week
- must apply for NI number if working, but CAN
start work before number issued - applying for a NI number
- Job Centre or Benefits Agency
- need passport certificate of attendance from

- Working in the UK after your studies
- To stay in the UK to work after you complete your
studies, you will need to either - Find a job with an employer who will apply for
permission under Tier 2 of the points-based
system for you, or - Qualify for a government scheme that will allow
you to stay and work. - Government schemes include
- Tier 1 (General) replaces the previous Highly
Skilled Migrant programme - Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) replaces International
Graduate Scheme - You can find out more about these schemes later
in the year. - Information about working in the UK after your
studies is on page 67 of your International
Student Handbook.

- Television Licensing
- If you have your own television you must, by law,
buy a licence for it. - If you are caught using a television without a
licence you can be fined up to 1000. - A television licence costs 139.50 for a year.
- You can pay by direct debit in instalments

- Driving in the UK
- To drive a car in the UK, you must have a valid
driving licence - You MAY be able to use the licence from you home
country for a limited period of time - There are many other rules and regulations you
must stick to - Before you consider driving in the UK, please
read Driving in the United Kingdom a guide for
international students to make sure you are not
breaking any rules - The leaflet is available from the International
Student Office - Information about driving in the UK is on page 34

rules and regulations and understand how they
work. - The rules are part of the contract between
students and the University. - You can read the rules on the Portal
http//portal.leeds.ac.uk - Go to the Student Services section
